Exclamation Replica Les Paul data base

It seems like there are quite a few replicas out there that have been made and they pop up from time to time on various threads. I would like to see an area where all of them can be displayed, talked about and knowledge about them can be shared. The replica's that I'm speaking of would be made by individual luthiers or home builders making their own projects. Posting photos of the head stock is not required as this can be a touchy subject, please feel free to share what you are comfortable with. Please No real Names of builders !!

Good idea, but certainly a clearinghouse of info for Henry and his merry band of lawyers to use for ill results....

I think all they would really have to do is read a couple of more threads here and have even more info...

I'm not requiring and names here, the last thing I want to do is cause any trouble for anyone.

Re: Replica Les Paul data base

much thanks to my pal spicoli for posting pics of my girls
sorry the pics are a little grainy.
having owned 100's of lesters thru the years,
these are hands down the only 1's i've ever owned that can compete tone wise with the 50's originals.[ my 2 50's goldtops that i lost in a fire in 96]
it must be the combinaton of the old wood and the craftsmanship, cause i'm sure it isn't me.
from what i've gathered , these were made in 79/80, and are 2 of 12.
as close to a burst as i'll ever get and they are a joy to play.
after adding these to my collection,i've sold all my historics.
historics are really great guitars, and i had 7 at 1 time including 03 brazilians.
these make them [my historics anyway],sound like .........,well you know,i just like these better
i feel blessed to own such fine examples, and actually sometimes feel not worthy.
i'm hoping this post will inspire others to show what ya got.
the 1 with out the covers is all stock, the other has a set of wcr crossroads and a r/s tone kit,1960 knobs and pointers
do i like 1 more than the other?
well kinda, but like children, i'd never let on.

All I gotta say is, It is rather nice that in this day and age we still have some " OLD world craftsmanship still available. Some companies and corporations might actually do better having these people come in and either assist or give seminars and lessons to theire respective employees . Lawyers in this country have enough to feed on

Couldn't agree more Don. What I find ironic is that some people value a poorly constructed Gibson product more than a completely hand made replica where even the headstock logo is of better quality. The replicas use carefully selected mahogony, old growth eastern maple, brazilian rosewood and carve these replicas to specs and tolerances as close to the real thing. Keeping in mind that the 'real thing', the 58's - 60's, had variances themselves. It's hard to compete with this type of craftsmanship when your a volume production facility.

Something to ponder - what if any of these replica builders built the same guitar under the Gibson roof? Would it be any different? The only thing I could see being different is that the price would probably be doubled.

Re: Replica Les Paul data base

I'll add my replica to the database.

Details:

-hand-made replicas produced between 1994-1998 in a private shop in Canada
- two production runs totalling about 40 guitars.
- about a dozen or so we pre-ordered by various collector types in Japan
- several were pre-ordered domestically and the buyer selected finish type. I bought a vintage TS-9 off a guy who was having one made. That's how I found out back in 1996.
- finished in iced tea burst, some deep cherry burst, a few lemon drops/unbursts, some ambers and only one all gold Mary Ford
- some were sold unloaded, bare of any hardware and electrics. Those sold loaded had repro nickel Allparts and Gibson Classic 57's
- Gibson lawyers served the shop a 'cease and desist' order and they haven't produced anything since then.
- They closed their doors to custom guitar making, repairs and vintage/used retail.

Talk is cheap.

Which is why the supply exceeds the demand.

So you think there are more high end replicas available than there are buyers?

I'd hazard a guess done under the big folks roof would be more than doubled, more like tripled . PRS believes that the hands on quality on building instruments is a big key in tone, I wont argue with a guy who in less than 25 years has become the US's 3rd largest guitar maker

The guy that was making those has done a few tings for me since then, and is still doing guitar repairs. We had two or three of those go through here to get equipped.

I didn't want to drown the thread in detail, but yeah, you're right. The shop still exists, but not the way it used to be. They now only make custom basses and no more used/retail. One of the main guys involved with the replicas still does repairs as his business. I guess the main point I was trying to stress is that the replicas aren't being made any more.

Btw, what did you do to equip? Curious.
