Dave Johnson makeover...The "Nicky" project

I am honored to unveil a project that has literally been months in the making. Let me explain: Mark, Dave and I conceived a project to replicate the color of my 59 burst Nicky. It was really a labor of love. For months, we traded pictures, pieces of stained maple, and generally just talked about the tiniest of details regarding the color of Nicky. Dave stained, and re-stained pieces of maple and guitars until he totally NAILED the color. After nailing the color, Dave made over two guitars...one for me and one for Mark. Here is mine; I'm sure Mark will chime in shortly. In addition to the color, Dave NAILED the aging. I wasn't going for the aging on Nicky. Rather, I wanted the "played to death in ****hole bars" look. I think you'll agree that Dave accomplished that goal admirably.
Without further ado.....here are some pics!

Outstanding, Charlie!!!

When I last visited Mark's shop in April I was lucky enough to be shown the maple test samples and several pics of your burst and all the progress that was made on the project. Dave and Mark and of course you and your burst got it VERY RIGHT. This is the color of the real deal. Congrats on the excellent work and the guitars.

Fawk...

Masterfully done. If you hadn't told us I would have thought I was looking at an authentic burst. Well done to Dave and Mark.

As stated above... a couple side by side pics are a must.

BTW: You take exceptional pics!

Re: Dave Johnson makeover...The "Nicky" project

Hi all, This is a project that Dave and I starting talking about over 6 months ago. Once we decided to put the time and effort into it, I contacted Charlie to get his blessing and to also ask him to join us as an advisor. Who better than the man who owns the Burst you're trying to capture the color of!! Charlie was a pleasure to work with as always and we had a lot of fun. Charlie had his '58 with Dave so he was also excited to have that guitar done in the new color. Dave Johnson has more patience than anyone I know and we tested it endlessly for 3 months!! I lost count of all of the samples he sprayed out. Once he knew that there would be even more needed, he came up with the idea of using 1/4" thick pieces of flame maple cut into half an LP shape and then also added binding to them. Quite elaborate for a color sample! (you can see them in the pictures below). Once he thought he was close, then we started mailing the sample boards back and forth to each other and then to Charlie for the final say since he had the guitar. The of the coolest thing about the Bursts that are this color is how different they can look from different angles and in different lighting. Sometimes the burst area can look dark and other times like a total Lemonburst. And there is a greenish brown hue around the burst that has somewhat of a dirty look. almost like the color is stained right into the maple. This is a look that I have never seen captured up to now in any way other than a real fade of aniline red dye. But after endless tries Dave did nail it as Charlie says. Below are some pictures of Nicky along with many of the samples. The last few pictures are of the 2013 R9 Dave did for me in the new color. I'm getting some more pictures together and will add more in another reply shortly.

Now this is something else altogether. No number of synonyms for "awesome" is enough.

What's the story behind the second to last pic above?
