Holster for Glock 17

Anyone have any good recommendations for a holster for my Glock 17. Not concealed carry, it has to be open carry here.

Either a nice shoulder holster or hip carry. Got to be able to work with it.

Thanks in advance

Re: Holster for Glock 17

I quite like my Safariland. It's damn near ten years old and looks practically brand new. I use it with a 19 now, but I used to wear a 17 in it. It works for both.

I don't recommend a shoulder holster. People think they look cool, but they're just not as practical or secure as a hip rig, in my opinion.

Yeah as with most cross draw holsters, with a shoulder rig you're likely to "muzzle" some part of your body if/when you're pulling the pistol out of the holster if you're not extremely careful where the barrel is pointed. You definitely would need to hold your arm high on that side while drawing.

Too much to think about, especially if adrenaline is flowing.

D@MN!!! Those are nice!!

Thanks for the link!

I got my HCP 3 years ago.. While I don't carry much, I'd suggest a good belt too. My holster (the sig that came with the gun) wore spots in 2 decent dress belts. I bought 2 Crossbreeds and I threw all of my other belts away. Those on the Mitch Rosen site look good too. Might give one of those a try.

Check out Crossbreed Holsters. I have an IWB for a S&W Shield and love it. They make OWB holsters too.

Re: Holster for Glock 17

Do you want leather or kydex?

If you want a kydex holster I'd look at a bravo concealment holsters.

For leather, go with something from Milt Sparks.

Re: Holster for Glock 17

I live in a rain forest - leather molds during the winter, rainy months so not leather.

Mostly just want to have the gun handy if needed and it's not handy if its in your desk or safe so a holster seems like the best idea.

I a kydex holster is just what you're looking for. My personal preference would be this:

Bravo Concealment Patriot Gun Holster

Oh yeah, Tropics do that.

Kydex is what I use for competition, but it can be hard on the gun's finish if it's something you care about (doesn't hurt my stainless Sig Sauer at all, but nice polished blued finishes can get beat up).

There are also nylon fabric holsters made by a variety of makers, usually pretty cheap.

I think Uncle Mike's makes some.

Cabela's also carries some.

Blackhawk makes some of the fastest Level 2 and Level 3 holsters around and they're better today than a while ago for reliability and durability. Never was a fan of the Safariland top loop design.

Re: Holster for Glock 17

I've been very pleased with my Blackhawk Serpa for my G19. It's plastic, but it's comfortable to wear on my hip and it has a button you have to press in order to draw the weapon, adding a level of security.

But I only wear a gun on my hip at the range or for tactical training, which is not very often these days.

Re: Holster for Glock 17

I open carry by choice, not necessity, but I carry off duty in a Safariland 6378 ALS, Glock 19.

At work, I carry a S&W M&P 40 in a Safariland 6285.

I like both holsters very much, and I very much do NOT recommend anything made by Blackhawk. I've seen them break, I've seen them jam, not in videos, but in real life. Go with a Safariland.

Safariland all the way.

The SERPA's downfall is in the release mechanism. If you fall on your holster in dirt, mud, or snow, you have the potential of locking your gun in it. This is possible, and it is likely. I like being able to remove my gun from its holster.

Absolutely. I've known so many people who spend crazy money on some high speed pistol with all the bells and whistles and then go cheap as dirt when a holster and belt are concerned.

I can't believe these things are still on the market...

SERPA's have also been banned for use at FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) and just about every reputable shooting school I've ever even heard of.

If you really desire to carry OWB with Level II retention, Safariland's ALS is a great holster for a little more coin...and it won't increase the chances that you might put a hollowpoint through your leg. YMMV.

That's the great thing about Glock's - Tenifer means never having to care about a pistol's finish. In fact - I think every new Glock owner should take their pristine new pistol, ensure that it's empty, and throw it down the street like you're skipping a stone. Put some scratches on the black oxide paint (it won't hurt the Tenifer treatment).

That way, they'll realize that this firearm's a tool, and treat it accordingly.

One of my traditionalist friends who hates Glocks would recommend this (along with not retrieving it afterwards)!

I'm not sure what childhood trauma caused his hatred of Glocks. Maybe there's a diagnosis in the new DSM-V about "Polyframephobia."

I've never owned a Glock myself, but would consider it, if it fit a need of mine.
