Best "Marshall in a Box"

I know this topic has been beaten into the ground, but I'm looking for a pedal that will give me a Gary Moore Parisienne Walkways kind of tone. Is the MI Audio Crunchbox any good?

Look into wampler, mi audio and the catalinbread DLS. I believe Cheopsis (member here, stunt monkey pedals ) makes a Marshall in a box.

Re: Best "Marshall in a Box"

I believe the Tone Freak Severe will get you there.
You need more gain than just a "Marshall in a box" type pedal. Moore always used some kind of drive before a distorted amp in those days.
I have it for sale right here BTW:http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/memb...istortion.html

Check out the youtube demos, like this one
this pedal is really sth.

Re: Best "Marshall in a Box"

Not quite boutique or anything but I'm really liking using my new Joyo British sound pedal as a Marshall voiced "gain channel" on my amp. Seems to have that sound pretty well covered. By extension the tech 21 pedal it was based off of would probably get you there too

It's a very broad topic. I honestly don't believe there is a single pedal that covers everything from Bluesbreaker to JCM, though the Tech21 British is probably the closest. The Joyo British Sound and Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret do a decent job with crunchy Marshall tones and setting up your EQ for a fuller sound, but you really need a separate distortion pedal to push the higher reaches of what people consider to be "Marshall gain".

There are a number that try to accomplish that trick. On the boutique end, you have stuff like Wampler's Pinnacle and the MI Audio Crunch Box, as well as the Suhr Riot. Joyo offers cheap versions of these types of pedals that cover a lot of that territory, which is nice if you want MORE different sounds for your money. The Ultimate Drive, Crunch Deluxe, Hot Plexi, and US Dream are all arguably "Marshall in a box" type pedals that offer different flavors of that sound.

Oh, and the new MXR Super Badass Distortion definitely has some Marshall in there as well, though it also has some light OD and metal sounds in there. Huge range of gain and a 3-band EQ mean that you have a lot of variety.

What about the Digitech Bad Monkey? I know it's a cheap pedal, but I heard Gary actually used that pedal at one point.

Bad monkey is a Tube screamer clone. A good one too. Not really a Marshall sound, but a good pedal.

The Weehbo JCM hands down might be the best MIAB around.... but the price leaves a lot to be desired.

Re: Best "Marshall in a Box"

FWIW: I've never plugged into a box that made me think I was plugging into a Marshall. I'm not specifically a "Marshall Guy" and I've never owned a Marshall. What follows isn't a quality statement on Marshalls or stomp boxes. It's just how I've experienced this topic.

Not playing through Marshalls much makes me keenly aware of Marshall tone and eq qualities of that tone when I do play through one. They do have their own unique sonic footprint. When it works, it's heavenly. When it doesn't, it's pretty irritating, IMO. But it's always Marshall.

With that, I've never ever plugged into any pedal, amp sim, modeler, etc. that feels/sounds the same as if I just plug into the front of a real Marshall.

I currently own a Wampler Pinnacle pedal that is awesome. It's supposed to emulate EVH's old Marshall "brown sound". It does an excellent job, but it's not the same as a real Marshall. I don't even mean that in a bad way. It's just different.

I've also owned a Marshall BB pedal. -Same thing.

Depending on what someone is looking for, finding "that" Marshall in a box tone is a long shot, IMO. Finding something that sounds really good to you that has that Marshall influence or vibe may be a more reasonable goal.

With that, I highly recommend looking at what Wampler offers. These are not cheap, but they are great pedals.

Your results may vary.

Good luck.

I guess that would depend which Marshall tone you are trying to copy. JTM45 Marshall tone, definitely check out the Wampler Plex Drive or the Carl Martin Plextone.
