7 Piece Top...Thoughts?

I just purchased this 7 piece top 74 Deluxe, how unusual is this? I've not seen one, it plays great, new fretjob. Not the greatest pic, there is a seem right along the far right vol/tone knobs and the same place on the left side.

Was it a refinish I wonder? Maybe it was a solid top in a former life.

Why do people say **** like this? Do you really think that's likely?

Do you think it's more reasonable that the factory did this or that some person actually took the time to cut the top off a Norlin, glue together 7 pieces of wood, glue them onto the body, shape the new top, put binding on it and then paint it like a real Norlin?

Could it have been a solid color that someone sanded down and refinished?

I don't know, I can't see it because of the little pic and I'm on my phone but cangrats.

Re: 7 Piece Top...Thoughts?

Honestly, I love it. I love guitars that are weird with their tops. While a 1 or 2 piece top can be beautiful I love seeing weird ones - I have a 6 string bass that has at least 5 pieces that make up the body. One is a tiny piece just right of the vol/tone. But it makes it fun!

Re: 7 Piece Top...Thoughts?

After zooming in it does look like a lot of pretty nice pieces of wood. It may have been a one off that a factory worker did or it might have been a test if they are all cut uniquely. The sunburst looks right for the years and I doubt someone would strip it and then repaint it with a period correct burst.

Re: 7 Piece Top...Thoughts?

Norlin era **** was quirky as hell. Nothing really surprises me anymore. Not even 7 piece tops.

Because it's likely true. GIBSON, you would hope, would cover that with a solid color. I highly doubt the poster was suggesting that it was Pergoed aftermarket........

Re: 7 Piece Top...Thoughts?

Yep! Strange beasts are cool to see!
I agree it could have been a solid color (have you had a look in the cavities?) that has been refinished. In '74, Wine red was quite popular.

I hope the glue sounds good!

Re: 7 Piece Top...Thoughts?

74 Deluxe.jpg

OK, hopefully you can click on the thumbnails to enlarge. Let me just say, this IS a 74 made in Kalamazoo, has a Trans Tenon, correct Pots, it's also a Factory 2nd. If you can notice there is a knot in the wood, in the lower 2nd plank in the dark brown. I plan to correct the bridge and tailpiece.

Here is the description from the seller..Hi, for your consideration is a vintage Les Paul Deluxe. The date code on the pot is 1974. The burst is also on the sides. The neck pickup is original and I modified a 490T in the bridge. I replaced the alnico 2 magnet with a short alnico 5 to get it close to the old T-Tops. It sounds great. It was just refretted with medium jumbos.. It plays beautifully. Better than the new Gibson's in my opinion. This guitar is almost 39 years old and its been played so, there are dings and dents. There is a scratch on the back of the neck. It is not a repair, This Lester has a valute head stock which is much stronger than other Gibsons. The serial number has a number 2 above it which indicates it was a factory second. It's due to the knot on the top that is pictured in the last picture. I used a flash to make it pop out but it's not that noticeable since it's in the dark part of the burst. I through in a vintage and REAL .022 uF bumble bee cap on the bridge tone pot and a .010 on the neck so it's a little more subtle. It comes with a hard shell case that is beat-up but very functional. The locks and hinges are still intact and working. There have been no repairs to this guitar except for the refret.

Feel free to ask to anything about her.

Everything down to the caps is right on, they are real paper in oil, no refinish. This guitar is Awesome!! I thought is was 5 piece from original pics I saw, but he disclosed it was a 7. They really don't stand out unless you look closely, they're probably better matched than alot of 3 peice tops I've seen. It's a keeper.
