Pickup review - MHD 86/87 custom wound

This review has been a long time coming... the guitar I put these pups in has been on the bench for repairs for a while.

Recently i took them out and installed them into my other LP in time for a gig.

MHD 86/87s are A2s wound to about 9k.

I had asked Rayne to wind mine not as hot... about 8.8 in the bridge & 7.7 in the neck.

How do they sound? WOW. Great pups. They sounded great at home thru the practice amp but even better cranked onstage thru the live rig & PA.

We joke a lot on this forum about slashtone but these pups can deliver you what you want

We played some GNR and after the show the soundguy told me in all seriousness that the tone I had goin' on was probably the closest he's heard to slash from anyone other than slash himself

These pups have a nice crunchy bridge tone and the neck has an amazingly smooth, almost glassy tone to it. Great harmonics too and can control feedback with ease.

So talk to Rayne at MHD and he can wind you a kickass pup

Re: Pickup review - MHD 86/87 custom wound

Id just like to give another shout out to these pups. We played some big outdoor shows over last weekend and my main guitar was loaded with the underwound 86/87s and my backup had Seymour Duncans I think they were SH4s, which were installed by the previous owner. Both guitars were les paul standards.

The 86/87s sounded amazing and just killed the SDs, which sounded thin and flat in comparison. A couple of times I had to switch guitars and you could tell instantly which was the better sounding one. It wasnt even close.

If you are unsure about whether MHD or any other other winders here can match the Big Boys for quality, you need not worry. The product is top notch

Thanks again Dizz. Yeah i really dug this set for the onset. I do not sell a lot of these as I normally do a butt load of higher stuff.
