NGD - Hamer USA Artist Custom

Had a late gig last night, and woke up to the postman knocking at my door @ 8:45 this morning... all the way from Memphis TN, my new USA Hamer Artist Custom, complete with OHSC. This is my first high end Hamer I've played. So far very impressed - the original Seth Lover duncans have been swapped out for some Fralin Pure PAF's, which is cool as they're pickups I've been really wanting to try for quite some time. So much lighter than my Standard LP - will definitely be with me on my NYE's gig.

Some pics I took with my phone:

Re: NGD - Hamer USA Artist Custom

Thanks guys - really enjoying the Hamer. It's a nice compliment to an LP... much more Gibson than PRS, which works for me. Looking good for it to find it's way into the keeper pile.

-Very sweet! The problem with Hamers are a lot of people get the US made Hamers mixed with the Slammer series or other import Hamers. US Hamers are killer! Congrats on the new axe!

Re: NGD - Hamer USA Artist Custom

USA Hamers like that have always impressed me as being an example of what would happen if Gibson built guitars with extreme attention to detail, every single time.

A Hamer is a Gibson taken to perfection. That's what it feels like, anyway.

Re: NGD - Hamer USA Artist Custom

FYI, I contacted Hamer to find out the truth regarding the rumors that they're done.

Straight from their mouths, they are on hiatus and not accepting new work at this time. They did not say anything other than that.

Hiatus may or may not be a permanent state of affairs. I hope not.

-Wasn't this the reason that Hamer and Dean came into existance? I may be wrong, but I thought they both started building guitars because of the sub-par products Gibson was putting out at the time.

Re: NGD - Hamer USA Artist Custom

Used her at my NYE gig - fantastic. I'm fast becoming a Hamer fan. Top is super nice. It's pretty as a 10 PRS with better (for me) playability. To be fair, I've just never personally warmed to PRS guitars, which isn't to say there isn't one out there for me.

Hopefully the Hamer Hiatus isn't permanent.

I can't speak for Dean, but Hamer (Paul Hamer and Jol Danzig) were running a shop repairing and selling vintage guitars, including 50's Les Pauls, and the concensus was that the current offerings from both Gibson and Fender weren't up to the standard of what they were making back in the 50's.

So Hamer and Danzig decided to put what they had learnt doing repairs into making an instrument they thought matched the quality of guitars from the 50's. The result was the Hamer Standard (the Explorer shaped model) and the Hamer Sunburst followed soon after. Though a bit more expensive than an equivalent new Gibson at the time, they felt they were putting out a vintage quality guitar for less than the price of what a 58-60 Les Paul was going for at the time.

Re: NGD - Hamer USA Artist Custom

Congrats!
Very nice guitar.

I've had a bunch of Hamers over the years and the one that stayed with me the longest was an Artist.
Fantastic guitars.

If you get the volume up on your amp you'll feel the air blowing out of the F-hole.
First time it happened to me at a gig it freaked me out.
I didn't know what it was. Something kept hitting my arm.
Finally figured it out.

Hamer: yes. Dean: in a way. Having owned a few 'vintage' Deans, I can say that while they're killer, resonant players and sound fantastic, once you get past the looks, good wood, and nitro, they can be a little rough on the inside. The truss rods, while functional, were crude and I've had more than one that had cavity covers missing screws...because there was no wood under the screw holes.

That said, I believe from a player standpoint, they beat anything Gibson had to offer at the time, hands-down. I'm in sell mode right now and I've got a black 80 ML Standard that I need to sell but...just...can't. It's too fantastic-even the old Super Ds can do just about anything in that guitar.
