Why do people say Randy RHoads had horrible tone?

Are we listening to the same albums? Especially on Tribute, the tone kicks major ass on there.

Re: Why do people say Randy RHoads had horrible tone?

Randy is FANTASTIC! I had a cassette from King Biscuit Flower Hour when Randy first HIT! He smoked. His tone may sound "different" when you take the band away. He sounds GREAT in the context of the band. He was working with a "dinosaur" pedal board.

Re: Why do people say Randy RHoads had horrible tone?

Actually... It IS a pretty common criticism, and one I remember hearing a lot back in the early 80's.

I think it's that some people think his "Blizzard of Oz" studio sound was shrill. It's a little icepicky to my ears, but I'm still a fan. Live, he always sounded great to me.

Get mad.

I'll play Devil's Advocate here;

I don't care for his tone - too thin, too processed.
Pedals, effects, blah, blah, blah...

Give me Angus and Malcomb Young's tone - plug in and GO!

But I tell people too, if you wanna know what a Marshall being driven like a locomotive sounds like - check Randy out...
(I swear I can smell those smokin' hot tubes...)

Randy did some cool stuff, certainly was a ground-breaker.
I think the reason he doesn't stand out more is that he so popularized what was already gaining fans...
... EVERYBODY recording a "metal" album saw his sound as the one to emulate - and did so.

Seriously, he was an amazing player, but his tone was a bit harsh if you ask me.

On that note, if people get mad about me saying that, then Op Troll is Sucessfull Troll.

I love the sound, but the guitar work is often double and triple tracked, along with other effects.

The sizzling opening riffs on "Flying High Again" still make the fur stand up on my arms 30 years later...

I loved the King Biscuit Flower Hour. I had a cassette from DIO when they first came out. Vivian Campbell ripped. I wish I had a copy of that.
