Not Fond of Venemous Snakes

I took my Boxer for a walk a few minutes ago. He stepped off the driveway into the grass and suddenly growled and jumped back. I looked and there coiled up and ready to strike was a large Copperhead. Well Mr. Copperhead got a quick introduction to Mr. 9mm! Tossed what was left of him in my burning barrel. A caution, to those that don't know, be very careful when you kill a venemous snake and don't pick it up in your hand. Use a stick or something. Dead snakes can still bite, and inject venom, long after they are killed. Not an old wive's tale but a very real fact. Has something to do with the nerves and muscles in their bodies. My Boxer was lucky and he didn't get bit. He should behave better as he owes me. Of course he'd tell you that he saved me by warning me the snake was there. Another word of advice, never believe what a Boxer tells ya unless he yells SNAKE! ROFL

Oh, and another reason you should carry at home not just when going somewhere!

If you define being eaten friendly, then sure.

I sure hope the only PETA people on here though are the "People Eat Tasty Animals" ones, otherwise this is about to get interesting...

One of my favorite talking dogs:

Talking Dog For Sale

This guy sees a sign in front of a house, "Talking Dog for Sale." He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the back yard. The guy goes into the back yard and sees a mutt sitting there.
"You talk?", he asks.
"Yep", the mutt replies.
"So, what's your story?"
The mutt looks up and says "Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leader, cause no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says "Ten dollars."
The guy says he'll buy him but asks the owner, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him?"
The owner replies, "He's such a liar."

Re: Not Fond of Venemous Snakes

Of course he was friendly. He'd have loved to have bitten either of us. I have grandkids and the snake you see today you might not tomorrow....UNTILL IT'S TOO LATE! I see one out in the woods it's fine but my yard is restricted to a NO Snake policy. My property, my families welfare, my rules.

River, my 9mm has saved me more than once. My choice to carry, your's not too. Just hope you never need a firearm cause you'll be outta luck it seems. My view is better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Snakes are more afraid of you than you are of them. They don't tend to strike unless they are cornered or feel threatened. Given a moment to retreat, Mr. Copperhead would have been on his way. I wouldn't have shot him, but this is coming from someone that's owned several Boas & Pythons over the years.

Aparently you know little of Copperheads. They are one of the most agresive snakes on the planet. A health adult would likely survive a bite. Someone, such as I with a severe heart condition might not. A bite could easily kill a young kid. Snake running loose in your yard, you had best always be looking for it. Dead snake, a whole lot less worry.

A little prodding with a long stick or branch would have sent the snake along on its way, if it was reluctant to move after a time.

I know enough to know that NO snake chases people. Venom is precious, and is best saved for securing a meal. He would not rush you & bite. He'd lash at your ankles if his space was violated.

Sorry, but I've seen numerous occasions where a Copperhead advanced on a person, myself included. I'm going by what I know, not what I heard.

Frankie, like I said, then I'd have a venomous snake loose in my back yard. Tell me, how me of you would care to have one loose in your's? Particularly you with pets or children?

Re: Not Fond of Venemous Snakes

I can't say I'm particularly fond of venomous serpents. There are many varieties that are common in Texas, and I've encountered pretty much all of them. Copperheads and Water Moccasins are REALLY common, even in large cities, and are fast and can be aggressive.

Water moccasins are the only snakes I've personally encountered that seem to stand their ground, or even rush towards a person that intrudes on one of them.

That said, snakes have their place in the ecosystem, even the poisonous ones, and I've found that they're usually easy enough to avoid. I've had a few close calls over the years though.

Most snakes will try to avoid people, but I have to agree that moccasins and copperheads seem to be an exception to this rule.

Still pretty easy to avoid them, if you know what to look for, and avoid the places they're most likely to inhabit... Although both have been known to hang out in places that we'd prefer they didn't - As a child, a copperhead was in a sandbox I was playing in, in the middle of the city! My dog killed it, and I was too young to realize I'd had a close call.

Then you've seen something that no herpetologist ever seems to witness.

Now if that were my boxer I'd probably would have assumed he was being a dipsh!t and smacked him upside the head. Luckily I don't have to worry about vipers in this neck of the woods.

I've seen that happen with copperheads, although I tend to think that although they extremely quickly squirmed towards me, that they were actually trying to get away from the loud humans that had just intruded on their hang out.

Re: Not Fond of Venemous Snakes

They can pack a wollop of a dose of venom and can do a number on a small child or beloved pet, to be sure. They are not usually lethal to most healthy adults. Still, the children are what matters here most.

I wouldn't kill one outright. I would see it on its way ( I have handled Copperheads and other venomous snakes). That is surprisingly easy to do with a care and effort.

Or not. In the end, you need to go with your gut.

I would never shoot a venomous snake with a 9mm, I would use at least a .45ACP!

Justice for copperhead Travon

I had kind of the opposite happen here last summer. My kids were out playing in the yard (one's a red-head). This pitbull looking dog (found out later it was a boxer) came into the yard and was walking towards my kids. I popped 3 rounds in the dog and tossed it into the woods out back. It was pretty crazy.

Justice for copperhead garweft.

You shot a boxer for looking like a pitbull and walking towards your kids?

You're a sick son of a bitch. That's a direct, ad hominem, attack upon your character. Report me, please. Please, oh, please.

If you need more grounds on which to report me:

**** you.
