Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

Hey guys, new member here.
I got a question that I think you might be able to help me with...
I've been playing the guitar on my transistor Marshall MG30 amp, and I want to move on to a tube amp because I think I am ready for it.
A sound that I would be striving for is like a Marshall classic rock tone 60's and 70's
Artists like AC/DC, Led Zep, and Early Clapton are my main influences tone-wise.

Anyways, if you got any suggestions on an amp that's under about 30W (Preferably head) that would be awesome!

Fill out the questionaire, this topic comes up at least 6 times a week around here. My advice would be to pick up a Jet City 20

Questionnaire is good.
(Depends upon you needs.)

So is Blackstar HT-5R.
Check it out.
Sweet sounds with all my guitars.

Good luck and have fun.

I have one on order right now. Supposed to be a classic rock machine. Check out the clips Rich and Rosco have posted here and on YouTube.

Re: Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

There are lots of amps based on the 18W Marshall that would fit the bill. Here's one called the Ace Pepper Speedster.

Pepper's Blues - "One Way Out" 2-25-12 - YouTube

My Phaez DC10 can also get good vintage tones.

These amps will do everything the OP described and then some.

Or, the Phaez Daisycutter. Mine does everything from GNR to Zeppelin to TOOL.

OP, if you're looking for something more mass-produced then the questionnaire will help us sort you out. If you just want a great amp and are willing to buy sight-unseen, I'd order the Phaez (or look for one used with a head cab).

Nothing Guitar Center sells.

No, let me rephrase since Rosco is on a break...nothing made in China.

Okay, ill do the questionnaire,
Thanks for the replies!
I was thinking an Orange TT, Jet City 20, or a Blackstar HT20

But these boutique Marshall clones have lots of buzz around them...
(Phaez, Ceriatone..)

Re: Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

Proposed Questionaire:

How much would you like to spend?
- under $700

What's the absolutely most you will spend?
- $800

How many years have you played guitar?
- 4

Do you seek tone quality or versatility?
- Tone quality

What is your primary guitar (include pup type and configuration)?
- Gibson les paul trad and Fender tele

What style(s) of music do you primarily play?
- 60's to 80's rock, Blues, Jazz

What one guitarist do you wish to emulate?
- Early clapton/early slash

Do you prefer to plug straight in, or will you be using effects?
- Plug in, maybe a couple boxes.

What will be the primary use of the amp?
- Bedroom, band rehearsal, small venue gigs (Mics occasionally available.)

Do you prefer a combo or head/cabinet (and why)?
- Head, because i have Band at school so I can just port it to school and use their cabs.

What amplifier(s) do you have/had and why do you want a change?
- Marshall MG... enough said? Haha I want an amp that will last me a long time and that makes me go nuts.

Please list five amps (minimum) that you have researched (if you can't do this, you're not serious)

1. Orange TT: I like that its portable and simple, but its cleans arent that good and i havent heard its drive tone. Pedal friendly?

2. Blackstar HT20: has all the features for me but its half solid state? and maybe too modern sounding.

3. Jet City JCA20: Heard it has a good tone, but lacks cleans.

4. Ceriatone 18 watt: Never actually heard it, rumors are its good? Kinda expensive and cant test it beforehand.

5. Phaez Marshall clones: again never heard it but people seem to like it.

Re: Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

Fender deluxe reverb and a good dirt box. Might not be a head but you got good cleans and it takes pedals well. Now on the other hand i'd be hitting up craigslist or local guitar shops for used heads. You can pick up some really nice used gear for that range. I'd say even a 50 watt head with a master volume or opeational wattage switch will get you some of those good tones your looking for.

Re: Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

There is a bunch of youtube vids for the Phaez amps.
Here are some I did...a vid cam was used, the amp sounds WAY better in person, as video camera mics are designed to pick up the human voice, and centered in the upper mids and lower highs..they also have a big proximity effect, which means the further the mic is away from the source, the less bass you will hear. You take this into account when listening to any demo done on youtube with a video camera. Youtube adds a bunch of compression as well, and that also effects the dynamics you hear. Anyway..
http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/squa...epth-demo.html
This next one is the Phaez SIBLY, which is based on the Jimmy Page "Since I Been Lovin You" tone. This particular amp also has a BF Feander clean channel. You don't really need a clean channel on the Phaez amps because of how well the clean up with the guitar volume. The JTM18/Jericho is very good at that. Alex, the guy that did these next demo's, is a member here.
Here is another one I did for a member here

Blackstar 20 watt HT series. It's head or combo. Blackstar is a very good amp. Made by former Marshall employees.

I have had 3 of them.

Rocknhorse1, thanks for the videos, you rock!
Btw I'm loving the custom built gear, I've been going through your whole channel haha.

The SIBLY has a great tone, and I've been thinking about going for it, its just hard without trying it out in person...
Also does it do good 1966 beano tones?
I heard something about kt66 tubes for that sound...

Re: Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

The JTM18/Jericho will get you very close to beano tones. If you really need that much wattage I am sure Randy will do one with a KT66 output tubes. He does lots of custom stuff...just ask him. He loves what he does, and I think he really likes doing little different things to his amps, so he maybe really into it.

Re: Good Options for a New Tube Amp? (Under 30 Watts)

There is the Carvin V3M, which has some great cleans and some great gain. This is a 3 channel amp with some balls and a lot of options. You can check out the clips on the website, where the guys does clean to Jazz to hard rock and it all sounds good.

$699 and for only $49 bucks extra, you can have them put a Vintage 30 speaker in it and for under $800 you have a nice amp. ( Oh... Switchable wattage from 7w to 22w or 50w. )

Carvin.com : V3MC 3-CHANNEL ALL TUBE MICRO COMBO

I have a Blackheart Handsome Devil, which sounds totally sweet to me, but I do need to swap out the speaker to get a tighter bottom end when doing Drop D or Drop C, but other than that, it is a nice litte setup I have for a nice Classic Rock or Clean tone and for the Hard Rock, I have an Overdrive and Distortion pedal to give me a little bit more.

The Blackheart Handsome Devil is a 1 channel amp with no effects loop, but it does have a Master Volume and Drive as well as Bass/Middle/Trebel and Presence. A nice wide range of tones can be had and it is a more boutique Classic Rock tone. I will be gigging with it, once I change out the Blackheart Speakers for Wizards or Governors.

I think were still ok talking about this here, since it is good information about the Handsome Devil and still follows the thread heading calling for a Tube Amp under 30w. Granted your not the OP, but why start another Blackheart thread and I hope the OP does not mind.

I get what I consider nice cleans at a respectable volume, not fender cleans mind you, but a nice warm tube clean. I use my Boss Super Overdrive to click in and out of the gain I want, and keep the drive on the amp in between the 1/4 and 1/2, which gives a nice warm clean tone. I can bring the guitar volume down just a little since I don't like my guitar all the way on 10 unless I really want to kick it. Anyway, I usually keep my guitar volume between 7-8 and then just kick on the super overdrive or distortion for the gain I want. I only actually have the drive/gain on inbetween 1/4 and 1/2 on my pedals for gain as well. I think it sounds great for what I want, I really do need to swap out the speakers though, so the amp can get to the Drop D and Drop C with some volume when I want it. I am still using my Mustang III for the hard gain stuff at the moment, but I am hoping to get my new speakers soon and this I am pretty sure will fix that.

That Phaez Sibly/Blackface it totally sweet though, especially in the 35w, plenty to gig with. (wish I had the money for something like that.) I wonder if Phaez can make something like that and it be switchable between 18w and 35w.
