What do You Think Should be Done to Help the Mentally Ill?

The other thread about homelessness got me thinking about this subject. Obviously, there are a lot of homeless mentally ill people, but not all homeless people have mental problems.

Like my thoughts on the homeless population, I have conflicted feelings about people suffering from serious mental illnesses.

Should we make involuntary commitment to mental facilities more common again? I have serious issues with limiting the freedoms of people, but those with serious mental problems can pose a risk to themselves and society at large... Should they be more easily committed?

There have been quite a few local news stories in recent years where seriously mentally ill people have killed or attacked other people, or ended up in stand offs with the police. In some cases the cops were basically forced to kill them. I've heard that one of the reasons this happens more often, is that the social/medical resources aimed at helping mentally ill people are inefficient at best, and it is no longer the norm for many of them to be institutionalized due to supposed abuses in the past.

I DO know that I encounter a lot of seriously mentally ill people walking the streets.

Opinions?

Re: What do You Think Should be Done to Help the Mentally Ill?

The problem with which I have direct experience is not involuntary commitment. It's the inability to get effective treatment voluntarily for less than $50,000 a month. If those who seek help can't get it, those who won't are goners.

Re: What do You Think Should be Done to Help the Mentally Ill?

They need to re-open the institutions. There can be HUMANE conditions. THESE PEOPLE DO NOT NEED TO BE IN THE PUBLIC! I have worked with them for 20 years THEY are dangerous. The pendulum effect has gone too far. They Were mis-treated for years> NOW they have Too many rights. Luckily the ones I work with "behave" for the most part.

Alot of the non-retarded mentally ill are "players'. Crazy enough not to work>Lazy drug and alcohol abusers. I look them right in the eyes. Most can control themselves> they choose not to. I have been in some"altercations" with the mentally ill. It is FUNNY how when they get hit back they get "sense". I ask them if they want to hit me? They say" NO you hit back" These People need a FIRM hand. It is time for new institutions.

**Edit** --Mod

But seriously, didn't there use to be more funding for these institutions that was cut?

Then again, a lot of these folks don't want to be in an institution...

*edit* @ River: $50,000 a month?!?

What we really need to work on is the social stigmas surrounding mental health. It's very difficult for people to get the help they need, not only because of the financial barrier, but because it's so difficult to ask for help without ridicule.

Bertzie In MY world I am the "straight" man. EVERYBODY I know is LOOPY. 75% of my friends have DrUG+ALCOHOL problems. I know a ton of "damaged" vets. I ALMOST believe they should "drug" the water.

I learned at a VERY young age about consequences. The people I know think nothing about them. This world is TOTALLy unstable. WE BREED TOO MUCH! I see a TON of babies with "lazy" eyes. Autism is running rampant! Bad genes are spreading like WILD fire. I would not want to be a 20 year old right now.

Re: What do You Think Should be Done to Help the Mentally Ill?

Clearly, society needs to do a better job handling the dangerous at least. My wife recently had to embalm an older man whose mentally ill grandson had cut off his head with a butcher knife. The stuff of bad horror movies and nightmares, but that kind of thing DOES happen.

How would a guy with mental problems that severe NOT be institutionalized?

It's call human rights to be free and do your own thing. In most if not all states you can not be held for more that 72 hours for evaluation against your will. I agree that the more dangerous need to be in longer to get treatment but sooner of later they have to come out to society and no one can force someone to take their meds. Result their back in the institution. OH and with the deficits the states have cut back on programs and the amount of money spent on mental health so the problem gets worse every day.

Now imagine raising your 11 and 4 1/2 year old in this kind environment. Our culture has become a society of labels: ADD, ADHD, OCD, Autistic spectrum disorders etc. Teachers and doctors want to label and "prescribe" treatment for our youth. We equally have an epidemic of drugged up kids that don't necessarily need drugs! What happens when we eventually take these kids off said prescribed drugs? Research has also shown that they have very long lasting effects.

Ugh, it just gives me headache thinkin of it.

I miss my kids, sorry

Re: What do You Think Should be Done to Help the Mentally Ill?

The problem is EVERYONE feels they need to breed. Look HARD at your family BEFORE you plan on having kids. It is PAINFUL to realize that it may not be a good idea to bring more DAMAGE-Cases into the world. I know depressive types with kids that are "troubled". The apple does not fall far from the tree.

My wife and I know the risks. We have both worked with the mentally ill and retarded. NOBODY faces the facts. I go to our apartment pool. AT LEAST HALF OF THE YOUNG CHILDREN are "Slow". I think that the pesticides......and the overall pollution has wrecked havoc on our bodies >thus the HUGE percentage of autistic,retarded,insane,ADD,Asperbers......THE LIST Goes on. Somedays I feel like screaming"SHOW ME ONE HEALTHY PERSON". I'm not kidding

I hear that ages ago you had to have a blood test before marriage.I suppose marriage is a thing of the past along with genetic testing for compatibility. It does seem to be a problem in our society though.Sometimes I think going backstage is the same as entering a Mental Institution.Me included!

I had a guy on Thorazine. It took him a year for his eyes to adjust after he stopped. He was THAT out of it. Unfortanately I believe he needed it. He was VERY violent. WE had MANY REALLY dangerous fights. Rolling around in glass while the TV is sparking and broken. I don't know what the ANSWER is. HEAVY DRUGS ARE THE ANSWER? I guess you have to decide. The thorazine makes you feel like a Zombie> without it your a MENACE. What to do?

I understand the "human rights" issue, I just think that if a person poses a serious potential threat to other people, then their "rights" should be limited. In those cases, I'm all for involuntary commitment.

Re: What do You Think Should be Done to Help the Mentally Ill?

I think the truly dangerous mental defectives are the high functioning type like John Hinckley, and David Berkowitz.

The guy stumbling down the street blathering nonsense is what people think of as mentally ill. Those will be the people locked up, and society will be no safer for it.

Until someone commits a crime, it SHOULD be hard to take away their Constitutional rights.

The problem is the State's failure to provide those who could effectively evaluate mental defectives as dangerous to society or not with the resources, and a payscale beyond the level a standard issue Social Worker gets (who seem to be the people doing the evaluations now).

Many in State prison should instead be in an institution for the criminally insane, but most States have decided it's too expensive to run those vs gladiator schools (prisons).

1. I am a nice guy but I don't like comments like yours to just dispense a drug like Thorazine.
2. I do work with NAMI to help remove the stigma and my comment was to show others where to go if they want to help. If you don't want to you don't have to.

Have a nice day.
