Re: Canadian military developing Stealth Snowmobile

Denmark, Russia and USA have all not so subtly tried to lay claim to our land up there especially with the proven oil reserves and the gaining viability of the Northwest Passage.

I'm glad we're spending to make our presence known up there, even if it's just a few patrols here and there.

Cheers,

Warren

In related news, the California National Guard has begun organizing a battalion of surfers, in the event we need to launch another amphibious assault. They will be armed with Mountain Dew and hackey-sacks.

4 frigates left here last week to head up north....nice to see they're at least making their presence known.

That's because they left the Newfie member of the design team in charge of painting it. No worries though, we always double-check anything a Newfie has done so we'd catch that.

Russia. Canada has always been aware of the relative closeness of Siberia to the north pole, and has always maintained exigency plans to deal with cases where the Russians pulled some sort of over-the-pole incursion.

In the article, the historian Lackenbauer wondered aloud what sort of threat the Canadian military could stop with use of these electric snowmobiles. Just off-hand, I can see where they would be useful for forward observers to call in artillery, air, and other strikes of that sort. The 15km range is a sort of handicap in this department, as it would limit their recon distance and strike range to just seven klicks... but that's better than nothing.

They might also be good for really hot ambushes on superior forces, such as when light infantry with AP munitions attacks an armored column and then has to run like hell.

In short, you could deploy them pretty much the same as one deployed dragoons, who were infantry soldiers that arrived on horseback, dismounted and fought on foot, then jumped back onto their horses to brody off (if it became necessary).

Motorcycle recon/infantry were very useful in WWII, and the USMC still mounts recon troops onto dirt bikes. I could see these forces being used in the same niche, especially once battery technology catches up and provides a longer range.

Yes. I imagine they'd be used for stealth spotting essentially. Also, they can run a lot further when running on the gas engine. I imagine the electric would be mostly utilized once closing in on the area of interest.

Well with resources beginning to dwindle, you just never know what might happen, where it might happen, and when it could happen. I mean back in 1980 who could have imagined that we would be embroiled in the middle east with combat troops.

Yeah, but I guess this really would be offset by a hyrbridized engine, as Mr. Zeppelli has suggested.

The 18th Airborne Corps (to include the 82nd Division) also uses dirt bikes in the same manner as USMC. It's very nice for an FO to be able to bug out quickly once he's kicked up a hornet's nest, that's for sure! When I went through FO school in the 70's they told us: never forget that the first guy they're gonna want to kill is YOU... and that every single one of them will be lookin' for ya at once!

Also, before I forget: several of my former comrades were sent TDY to train with various Canadian military units. Every one of our guys was hard core, and every one of them came back to report that Canada's troops are truly excellent. I got particularly glowing reports of the VanDoos, who have been legendary since the 2nd World War, and those guys from CSOR are some tough bastards-- very STRAC. And that was very high praise, considering that it came from some of the best and most experienced soldiers I served with. SF troops are exceptionally gung-ho and competitive, and they don't really like to praise other units... not even their friendly counterparts from other nations.

In my trade we rotate through Alert, sometimes spending 6 months posted there. For those who don't know where it is, it is the most northern outpost just north of Greenland. I can tell you, I'd like one of 'em skidoos while I'm up there.
