What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

In speaking to forum member LarsK I mentioned that my first Les Paul will be home here with me this weekend and that I am going to name her 'Jessica' (because I am such a huge Allman Brothers and Dickey Betts fan - especially Dickey Betts). Being a Betts fan himself, he understood exactly why I have chosen that name (I considered naming her something else and saving 'Jessica' in case I buy a Gold Top but I figure I might as well use the name now in case I never get around to buying a GT). LarsK also mentioned that he thought this would be a good idea for a thread so here it is!

So, what have you named your guitars and why did you choose those names?

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

My goldtop I call her Goldy
My gretsch I call him Billy (rock-a-billy) and for the record when I pull him out of the case I do my Judge Shmells imitation "oh billy billy billy billy... billy bahroo" http://www.hark.com/clips/httddvjlhm-billy-baroo
My black Mustaine V I call it the V or a few other names as well..
My 3 acoustics have no real name... although my Alvarez I call her "my girl"

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

Reading your post reminds me that I should name this LP Jessica and, if I ever do get a Gold Top, I can just name that one Goldie just as Betts named his. Alright, that settles it, this one is definitely going to be named Jessica.

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

I named my Les Paul Roxanne. It just seemed right. I have decided that when I get married I will have my wife sign one of my guitars (probably one of her choosing to make it more special). And I will subsequently name that guitar after my wife. I know, I am weird lol

My 1950's Musina Archtop = Cynthia
After John Lennon's first wife

My Hofner 1967 500/1 bass = Mary
After Paul McCartney's Mom

My 1974 SG200 = Becky
Since this was my first guitar, I named her after my first girl-friend

My 1978 EDS-1275 = Kathy
Named her after my brothers girlfriend during the time he owned it.

My 1980 LPC = RanDee
Since she was a very limited run and was base on the 74 LPC that RR owned, I felt compelled to name in two part.

My 1981 Washburn A10 = Allison
Girlfriend during that time

My 1983 Kramer Baretta VH model = Valarie
You get the point

My 2006 Epi JL REV Casino = Yoko

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

Here goes..

Gibson LP: Tracey (middle name of my better half)
Epi LP: Honey (nick name of my better half)
Gibson SG: Red Baron (heroic WWI aviator)
Fender Tele: Crowbert (cat name)
Squier Tele: Nala (cat name)
Fender Strat: Pita (its a pain in the a.. to play her, she is in her case a lot)
Epi Acoustic: Blueford (cat name)

I actually write the names on the headstock with a special gold paint marker from Office Depot. Obviously once I do that I can't sell them anymore, or the buyer doesn't care.
Every guitar has a soul, and now I feel bad for Pita...

My #1 is "Ruby". Just came to me while I was playing it. It is a Cherryburst but the name Ruby just came to me while playing her one day.

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

All four of my guitars (3 electrics and 1 acoustic) ended up with a name. But two out of the four were named in a manner that reflects a distinctive lack of ingenuity.

Which is to say that I call my Martin D-15 by the name of "Martin" and my GLP by the name of "Lester".

The Stratocaster ended up being called "Freddie", and that was for no particular reason at all. One night while jamming with two friends, I asked one of 'em to "please hand me Freddie, over there", since the guitar was on a stand closest to the person to whom I was speaking. No clue why that was the name I assigned in that particular moment, but somehow it stuck. Even my friends call that instrument "Freddie" now.

The last one is an ES-335 Dot that ended up being named "Belle" because she is very much like my idea of an old-school, antebellum Southern Belle. That is, she is stately and gorgeous, somewhat overdressed, and is capable of purring seductively, shouting hoarsely, or shrieking with hysterical shrillness-- and she's a beautiful scarlet color, and so she reminds me of Scarlett O'Hara, who was the ultimate Southern Belle...

One of my friends figured that I called her that because she's a custom shop job and came from Memphis, ergo, "Memphis Belle". But really, that wasn't how she got her name at all. In fact, I had more or less forgotten that she was built in the lovely City of Memphis, Tennessee, when she acquired her feminine sobriquet.

I have a tendency to name most of my more important possessions. For instance, I call my Harley by the name of Frankenhog, and refer to my favorite handgun as Ol' Rusty.

Seems like about the only thing I never named was my house!

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

I have an ObG 57C called the 57
an ObG 59R which I call the 57 or brown one
a Dillion Explorer which I call the explorer
an Ibanez Roadstar which I call the Ibanez
an Orville Special which I call the Special
an Ibanez Rickenbacker bass copy which I call the bass
and last but not least, my Garrison G40 acoustic which I affectionately refer to as the acoustic....

They're all inanimate objects...not like my cat who will respond to anything

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

If I'm asking someone to hand me my guitar (which is probably the only time I would ever assign a name to my instruments), it would probably go like this...

Ibanez Les Paul: "Yeah, the Ibanez one..."
Gibson LPC: "Yeah, the black one...careful, it's heavy."
Fender Stratocaster: "No, not that black one, the other one."

I also have "the bass," "the acoustic" and "that old piece of crap in the closet" too.

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

Ok here it goes

Most my guitars are named after girls who have meant something to me, however i use their middle names so that there is a slight anonymity to it. There are two exceptions the first being:

Jessica-- First name of my closest friend, she loves acoustic music, and this is my favorite guitar an Ibanez acoustic which i learned how to play on

My next favorite guitar my R8, named Elizabeth, middle name of a girl who lived next door to me who I had a brief but passionate fling with, bought the guitar the same week we slept together

This one is named Allison-- middle name of my first girlfriend-- had this guitar for years so i thought it was fitting, turns out however she lied to me about her middle name, and where she was born, i guess she has more issues that just her daddy problems, but the name remains the same (har har)

My R0 (Beano) Is another exception to the rule, it's named Sugarplum, after my late dog, growing up i didn't have many close friends and my dog Sugar was always there for me, I've been waiting to find a guitar good enough to bear her name, it's too bad i didn't find it before she died, rest in peace shuggie

Two guitars with no names are the R9 i bought, and sold within a few weeks (it was not a bad guitar it was just not interesting enough for the money spent on it)

The second without a name is a telecaster my friend gave me, i love this guitar, it plays like a million dollars but it's a 200$ Squier, just haven't found the right name for it yet

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

Meet Rosie . . .

I named her for a favourite great-aunt who was one of the few relatives I had growing up who actually thought my playing a guitar at all was a fine idea. I never forgot her encouragement, and I never will.

(My father was one of them---it was he who managed to scrape up my first guitar, a worse-than-cheap acoustic, just months before he died. We didn't have the most solid father-son relationship, it was one of those when he was good he was the father you wish everyone had/when he was bad you wanted to be anywhere else, but for that gift alone I couldn't have asked for a better dad. The problem is, I feel weird naming guitars after men and I always will. But my mother always thought it was a waste of time.)

I've only really named my Menace. I call her "Duvessa".

Duvessa; [Doo-vay-sah] ~ Origin: Irish. Meaning: "Dark Beauty".

I have to say I agree with you. (Aunt Rose was beautiful, too.) She's become my go-to guitar, and I have two other Les Pauls I love, but this one absolutely sings and cries to me.

Re: What Have You Named Your Guitars And Why?

Some great names so far and even better stories.

Before buying this LP I have owned an entry level Ibanez which I didn't name but came to be known as Blackie because it was black and that was how my roommate and his brother referred to it. I traded that in on an Epi G-400 SG but never named that one either. That Epi was traded in towards a Strat that was never named. And that Strat was sold to help finance the purchase of Jessica. I guess I decided to name her because I know she isn't going anywhere - she is here to stay and therefore deserves a name.

I have yet to give my Seagull acoustic a name but, since I know I won't ever be getting rid of that guitar either, I guess I should come up with a name for her. Now what should that name be...

I generally don't give my guitars names anymore, but my Takamine I think of as "Hermosa" or "Guapa" because that's how it was described by one of my employees when I took it to work one day:

Let's see....

The LP
The Squier
The Strat
The DeltaTone

Reasons for the names should be obvious.
