Re: NGD: 2016 SG Standard...May Have Cracked Neck...Opinions!

It doesn't matter how competent (or otherwise) the tech is. Without "major surgery" all any tech can do is to hide the crack -- but this will not address the cause. IMHO the wood at that point on the neck has been at least significantly weakened -- if not actually cracked. The only FULL CURE is to break off the headstock and glue it back on. But this will leave cosmetic problems that will be difficult (if not impossible) to fully repair.

OK...here is the reason I'm keeping it.

It was insured. I will get a payout for the damage.

It is also under warranty...I may also get a Brand New guitar.

If it becomes a repair and I am compensated I will have a repaired SG Standard for around $400...

If it becomes a warranty replacement I will have a Brand New SG Standard for $850...

There is no way I see a loss in any circumstance.

I have USPS Insurance

I have Reverb Customer Protection

I have Guitar Center Pro Warranty Coverage

If all that fails the seller has agreed to STILL take the guitar back for a FULL refund.

FWIW I received a broken SG (that I sold here) that was fully insured through USPS and even though it was packed above and beyond how retailers ship USPS wouldn't honor the claim. They took the guitar and packaging to inspect and said since there wasn't any damage to the box that it wasn't their fault, that and because it was packed in a hardcase that also showed no damage.
We all know that if the box fell or was mishandled it wouldn't necessarily damage the box or case and that the headstock can crack from impact. They didn't want to hear it and said their decision was final. However if the seller purchased Reverb's insurance you should be all good.

Good luck with everything.

I feel you on the USPS claim, I'm not expecting any miracles there.

My first step is to go to Guitar Center tomorrow and see what they say on the Pro warranty that covers damage from such things as drops by the player and such...

I'll let everyone know how that plays out...

Re: NGD: 2016 SG Standard...May Have Cracked Neck...Opinions!

I had the same thing on a used Pelham blue custom I lusted after for a year and finally got a price on it. Arrived with the same thing, if I weren't on my phone I'd post pics. I took it to and ex Fender custom shop luthier who lives in my town. Said he could fix it. Deliberated for a day and sent it back. I understand what you're going through.

I however would not let guitar center touch my guitar for any type of neck or finish repair. Hell I wouldn't let that place change my strings but that's a whole different story. Maybe you can ask to take it to somewhere and have them foot the bill. Chances are their "techs" won't know what to do anyway. Good luck

I am torn for sure. I love the guitar and I want to keep it.

Don't worry no Guitar Center tech will touch it unless it's the Original Hollywood store. That place is fantastic and they have good people there. I was in there last week and they have some $30K guitars.

Anyway the Pro Warranty is a straight up replacement deal. If I take it there I should be able to walk out with a new guitar. Problem is this one has been modified. It DOES NOT void the warranty, but I would have to have the new guitar modified...

Here are a couple pictures of her...

And I mean enough movement to weaken the wood. As this guitar neck has the crack on both sides where it meets the headstock, it would be my opinion that the wood at that point has been weakened, if not actually cracked.

Then the fact that it is an SG reinforces my theory, to me. SGs are notorious for developing cracks at the heel and the headstock.

In summary, I think it is a crack, or something like it.
Stress caused it more than likely. Can't tell from the pics if it's just the finish.

Re: NGD: 2016 SG Standard...May Have Cracked Neck...Opinions!

It's very odd that I have only had this guitar for 24 hours and I feel seriously attached...

It has issues and may have a broken neck, but I don't want to let it go...

This is a first for me...

I don't blame you, for it's an absolute beauty of a guitar. I've got some serious SG lust goin' on here. Love that thing.

Don't think you have a broken neck though.

Still, if you can get completely comped or the same axe out of it, go for it.

Re: NGD: 2016 SG Standard...May Have Cracked Neck...Opinions!

Well...I just got back from seeing the guitar tech/luthier because he is also a builder.

He invited me in the shop to inspect the guitar alongside him with some hard lighting and a heavy duty magnifier. Good news is no neck break! Just a finish crack, but he said it had to have been smacked a little even for that.

I left the guitar to have the finish repaired 100% under warranty...no charge at all.

I'm really glad it wasn't cracked because I fell hard for this guitar for some reason. A couple people came in while we were going over it and gave some oohs and ahh's because it's just THAT nice!

Long story short I was keeping it regardless....

I'm no expert but check your PMs. There's a guy in the SG forum with a 2016 Faded with a similar problem on both sides of the headstock.

Wow...that one is really bad looking and WAY worse than what mine looks like.

When the tech was inspecting mine he put a large amount of pressure on the headstock and neck and the as no separation of the wood visible at all...

Re: NGD: 2016 SG Standard...May Have Cracked Neck...Opinions!

It appears that the OP has had the matter checked by a true pro luthier, and there is no wood crack or grain separation from stress, and the guitar will be cosmetically repaired. I never meant to say that such cracks in the finish ALWAYS mean there is wood damage -- just sometimes. Enough times to scare me away from a guitar with them without a true pro exam -- which the OP got.

Re: NGD: 2016 SG Standard...May Have Cracked Neck...Opinions!

Thank you all for the looks at the guitar and the comments. I value them all and that is why I posted here.

The guitar is under a full replacement two year Pro Warranty. So if this problem or any other crops up in the future I'm still covered.

I hope no issues arise because this is the first guitar that I've completely fallen for on first sight and play...even more so than my R8...
