Want that KISS sound?

I haven't even heard the end result but this is a great article.

Re: Want that KISS sound?

No. As much as I love their early stuff, I'm uninterested in them being their own tribute band. Thanks anyway.

That is why I thought you MIGHT appreciate an article on how someone went about getting that ORIGINAL sound. Guess I was wrong.

If you can find documentation on exactly how it was done the first time around I would LOVE to read..

Don't get me wrong...I am not saying that is not out there....I am being literal..I would TOTALLY love to see it. The early kiss vocals are maybe the holy grail of rock vocals for me.

I have a guy wanting to do a trade with me...seems to be a very talented and accomplished audio engineer/designer...amazing creds...but anyway he is maybe going to build me something sweet for a vocal front end...so I was researching what KISS used back in the day...LA2A was my guess fro the compressor and it seemed I was right.....

anyway...I really love the good inside peek on what the big time engineers do.

Cool article. +1 on the LA2A. I always track vocals with mine...wouldn't be without it!

According to Ace, you turn everything to 5 and start playing.

Yeah, sorry it seemed like I was critiquing you. I wasn't, I was critiquing the band. Them trying to chase their own tails is interesting, though. considering that Paul wrote in his book that he didn't like the sound of the first two albums. They were certainly all about touting Sonic Boom being a throwback on the publicity for the album, though.

A good source for all sorts of KISS info is here. It's not as technical as the PG article you linked to, but that site's Album Focus is packed with information on all of their albums.

Re: Want that KISS sound?

I found it very interesting to read. It sounds like it would have been a complete blast to work with quite honestly. Im vintage to the max so if I ever got the opportunity to make my own record I would definately want to do things as old school as we could make possible.

And although I love the original KISS lineup more than anything in the world, I have to admit that I enjoyed Sonic Boom and when I saw them live with Eric and Tommy, they both sounded great. Tommy is actually quite a good guitar player in my opinion, and although I don't necessarily like him in Ace's makeup, I can't say I would deny the offer to do his job if I got it.
