Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

Hi boyz,

I have a Tokai LS95F and I'd change pickups.

I'm undecided between SD Seth Lover and Gibson Burstbucker 1 neck/2 bridge. I haven't considered any "boutique" pickups because cost too much (specially in Italy).

I want a brighter tone for blues/rock '70: Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Santana, etc etc.

Does exist any video or audio file to hear a differences between these pickups?

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

Funny, my last 2 guitars came with both those pickups, 04' Navigator with Seth Lovers and 2010 58' VOS, burstbucker 1/2. I just sold a Tokai with the Mark II's and thought they sounded pretty good, actually. Guess I'm not much help, as I plan on changing out the navigator and Historic with Motorcity pickups but, the Seth's might of had better clarity over the Burstbuckers.

No contest IMHO. Seth Lovers are a superior pickup in every sense. Seth's are a lot fuller and yet more articulate than Burstbuckers. Much more dynamic to my ears as well. Frankly, I prefer '57 Classics to the Burstbucker, and even 490's with different magnets sound better to me. '57's match very well in the same guitar as a Seth, as well.

TNX my friends! From YT video, I have hear this difference for BB and SL: SL are more bright and clear, but I had a confirmation.

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

Yes Seth Lovers may work better then BB1/2s in most guitars for most players.
as I know both - I d say Sethlovers- if you stick with SDs- check Antiquity Neck and Bridge SethLoverB

But you may as european, go for excellent winders/sources in europe, too. as there are quite a lot her. in GB Bareknuckles, Shed ...
in Germany Leosounds, Häussel, Amber, Barfuss,Kloppmann, dommenget, Duesenberg and 2nd hand to check !
If have Häussel1959ers (ACY) and Leosounds CreamGen and find them personally both superior to Duncans. They will stay for a longer time I guess. Leosounds HB price not higher then new duncans SL!

those from US SD , Wcr , rio gran de,fralin, guitarforce, sheptone, motorcity, wolfetones, zhangliqun.skatterbrane wb,sorryfor those forgotten,ah di marzio, and etc

Thanks my friend. I don't know some of this european producers.

I have found a bargain for new set of seth lover: 120 € (shipping included) from USA.

Many of this pickups cost too much for me (250-400 € ) and I don't found it 2nd hand!

SD Antiquity in Italy cost too much, 250-270 € for a set!

David, It's half the output of a regular Burstbucker! Ya know, Burstbuckers have been getting a bad rap. I changed the fake Bumblebees with real ones and my R8 did a 360. Before, I thought the neck kinda muddy in the mids and overpowered the bridge, which sounded a little thin with no chunk on the low E. Now, it sounds balanced in all 3 positions, clarity improved in the mids and high strings grew somer weight to them, now the bridge sounds chunkier on rythms. The dynamics seamed to improve overall, reacts better to volume and picking technique.

Nah it's the real designation because the BB's sound 1/2 as good as everything out there including stock Epi pups............

But then again none of my Gibsons ever keeps the stock pups, I don't like Gibson pups except the 500t.

I just bought a guitar with Eppi's, the ones with epiphone engraved on the bottom and I couldn't disagree more. The Burstbuckers were more articulate and responsive to dynamics. 500T, I used to like those 20 years ago, when all I played was Metal but, not much use for anything else. Not very articulate or verstile.

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

I'm a metalhead hence the love for Super Distortions and the 500t , and I was being facetious about the Epi pups being better.
The BB's just aren't that impressive to me.

I am still not a fan of Gibson pickups, never have been.......if I'd know the T-tops and Shaws were gonna be worth money someday I wouldn't have tossed so many of them out in the 80's and early 90's.

I had a box of stock Gibson pickups that I had taken out of guitars since the late 70's.

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

Yeah, I can think of alot of pickups I prefer over burstbuckers. I used to throw t-tops and shaws out for Super Distortions and 500T's back then myself but, now I actually prefer them for there transparency. Funny, how things change.

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

I wd rather check european winders.why? simply they may be good as americans.
mind the freight and tolls !!!
a real hot addresse is leosounds - I have a pair 59 cream gen, when its needed more
power well then growl dogs pair ca 180 euro. the sethlover are more vintage with less
sparkle to my memory. for the neck I wd go for antiquity neck this was the best duncan neck I had together with pearly gates neck (I had quite a lot Duncans).
for just SeymDuncan my fav combo is Neck : PGn ,Antiq. ; Bridge : SH-1, SH-55.
but just my experience...
but 120 f. a set SL is not bad.

i honestly don't mind my BBs. i have a 1-2 mix in my LQ Epi.

they sound nice with some '50s Bees in there as well, put it that way.

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

I know it is a sport here to beat on the BBs, but my main gigging axe has a BB3/bridge BBPro neck. The BB3 is a fantastic bridge pup (I don't care for 1's or 2's so much), and I love the BB Pro in the neck, the A5 adds just the right amount of bite. I play plugged straight into a '90s Fender Super Amp.

I arrived at this combo after swapping out literally dozens of pups and reading through zillions of threads here. In the end, this was the combo that sounded and felt best under my hands. Trust your hands and ears

I can vouch for that, putting bees in my 58' VOS totally changed my perception of Burstbuckers. Those fake Bees are a joke. I've heard some say, they were Mallory 150's but, somehow I doubt it. I've used Mallories and they were nicer sounding.

I don't mind how the BBs sound in the G0. I need to get some real bees, though.

Almost any PIO cap would be better than the stock caps but, then again if you want that sound, BEES are pretty unique sounding.

Re: Seymour Duncan Seth Lover vs Gibson BurstBucker 1/2

Neither for me. I have had both, and both have been gotten rid of. I have also gotten a nice Edwards LP130 recently that came with SD antiquities. Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed by those as well. Maybe because I expected a lot more from them?

I hate to say it, but once you go boutique for PAFs, you can't go back. If you like SDs, the GOOD FOR YOU. Stay that way! Don't bother changing. Or else your wallet and your ears will regret it.

I had a '91 Standard that the previous owner had put BB 1/2's in. I decided to try some SH55's. After putting them in, I never looked back.

You really should have two guitars. One with Seths and another with BB1/BB2.
Antiquities were a little weak for my liking.
