Talking WB Hot Vintage Tuned PAF Tone Report

Installed a set of WB Hot Vintage Tuned PAF's in a 2007 Les Paul Studio Premium Plus.

Here are the particulars of the stock vs new pup's output specs

Stock Gibson
N - 7.89K (490R)
B - 14.12K (498T)

WB
N - 7.60K
B - 8.28K

The WB Hot VTP uses an Alnico 5 mag bridge and Alnico 2 mag neck per Will's recommendation.

I also installed Allparts .022 Vitamin Q Caps in place of the stock Gibson caps and left the stock volume and tone pots in place for now.

Tone and Sound

This upgrade totally transformed the guitar into a tone machine; the difference was like night and day.

The dynamics and sound are very clear and articulate compared to the stock pups and caps. When the tone control is rolled back in the Bridge or Neck position the difference is huge with the Allparts Vitamin Q caps in place vs. the stock Gibson caps. The tone controls now have so much more range and really make the roll off from 10 to 0 very noticeable.

The pickups are so much more balanced, clear and refined from high to low string vs. the stock Gibson pups. It is not even a question of should I have kept the stock pup's or went with the WB's. The WB's totally changed this guitar for the better.

In closing. When you talk to Will and ask questions about his pickups and company, it is like talking to a good friend, Will is a great guy and totally dedicated and passionate to what he doe's and truly care's about his customers and making the best pickups. He is honest and straight forward about the growing pains and past mistakes his company went through due to the boom and explosion of business and keeping up with the demand of new orders as a one man winder and pickup maker.

My order was delivered in less then 2 weeks from the date I placed it, excellent turnaround time as part of WB's new goals toward improved delivery time and customer service.

I will not hesitate to order more products from Will in the future, should I acquire any new guitars that I feel could benefit from a Pickup Upgrade.

Best Regards
Joe Kranitz

Here are a couple of pic's that show the new WB Pickups and the Allparts Vitamin Q capacitors that I used for this upgrade

Nice looking guitar, man. Very elegant! I've got a WC R9 that's going to get a new Aged kit from RS and some 67-07 Vintage Hots. Still on the fence as to whether I should go with the 2/5 combo or just get both with 2's. Will seems to think the 5 adds a little more bite. He said both neck and bridge with 2s sounds very 'pretty'. Bet it's just like a honeydripper then.

Thanks for the compliments, I hear those 67-07's are the bomb, just incredible.

I don't think you can go wrong with the 2/5 combo or 2/2 combo, if you are more of a jazzy articulate chordest and vintage player that does not use a lot of heavy overdrive for lead sounds and want a softer flutely like attack the 2 in the bridge may work better.

Best bet is to talk to Will and describe your favorite tones and styles and see what he recommends.

Post a Pic of your guitar for us when you get it finished, looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks
Joe

Thanks Joe--hardly awesome playing, but for one-shot takes I'll take what I can get.

Can't wait to hear yours in action!

Re: WB Hot Vintage Tuned PAF Tone Report

I need to talk to will about getting a set, I think, just to put on the side. I think these pickups are gonna be smokin' hot, going by the reports I'm hearing from you guys.

Now the question is...what am I gonna have to buy the wiff now?
