Question Sheptone 10K Ceramic Humbucker demo mp3 Sound-clips

I Recorded some sound-clips of the Sheptone 10K Ceramic Humbucker with double screw bobbins that is in the bridge of my Maple top Tele. Shep just made a limited number of these pickups.

I used the 5 watt valve jr. tube amp and Marshall 4 x 12 cabinet for all the clips with different gain settings. I really like this Sheptone pickup a lot and find it very responsive. Even though it has a ceramic magnet I did not find it to be harsh, but very warm and vocal. See what you think?

The crunch in drop D was dark and heavy, was great.
My favourite tones were were coming from the blues licks. Great tone going on there...
you must have some great capacitors in play for enhanced tone too?

Thanks for listening, I appreciate your input

Considering I am playing on a 5 watt tube amp with no Tone controls or eq, you are hearing the pickup, guitar and wiring (fingers & pick) with little or no coloration from eq or fx.

I have a pair of Alpha 500K Audio push pulls and an .022 GUDEMAN paper in oil Tone cap in that Tele. The cap was not rolled off at all. It still sweetens up the circuit but I can't say it was playing a major role in the sound clips.

That pickup is very responsive and touch sensitive as a result I think my playing sounded very expressive especially in the blues licks sound-clip. I think I may be hitting Shep up for another one of these 10K Ceramics for the bridge of my SG

WoW, thatīs a great sound.
The Drop D clip was Black Sabbath all over it you should tell Iommi about theese pickups.
I didnīt expect the blues clip and the cleans to sound as good as they did, thought they would have some more "sharp" attack i think some ceramic produce.

Re: Sheptone 10K Ceramic Humbucker demo mp3 Sound-clips

Cool stuff ! I also prefer the blues licks

Usually I prefer to stay away from ceramic pickups but I have to admit that this one sounds pretty good. Another good point for Sheptones pickups (I am considering buying the Sheptones AB or the Wolftones Dr V and can't decide on which ones to go. Lots of good review for both...but that's another story )

A lot of the ceramic pu's that you are used to hearing that sound harsh are machine wound pu's. These are hand wound so I think that is why they sound as warm and vocal as they do, but are still crisp and pronounced. Thanks for listening to the clips and as always I appreciate your input.

I really don't know much about the Wolftones. But the AB's are a great set of pickups, slightly hotter PAF's and a lot of players use them with my Jimmy Page rigs. If you want a more vintage neck go with the BK set, but it still has the hotter bridge pu like the AB's.

Thanks for the advice Jonesy ! Indeed I still can not decide myself if I want some PAF flavor with hotter output/A5 or a lower output/A2. I currently favor in my rig lower output/A2 pickups but having some hotter A5 could also brings new tones...

For Classic rock and Blues I favor the A5's and find them to be a bit more expressive. If you want strictly a lower out put PAF and do not seek the drive then I would say go with the A'2s.

A nice hand wound PAF with A5's will still deliver beautiful clean Tones and tight bottom and it will also give you that little extra shimmer that you won't get from A2's. But that's just my take on it

Yep... LOVE the tones from the Sheptone clips... I've ordered a Brian Kahanek set for my Schroeder Custom build. Should be here in a couple of months time... Can't wait!!!

Hey thanks for the link heads up. Yeah those clips sound nice, the blues one has that elusive sweet sound a millisecond after the note is picked-its hard to describe...its almost a squeak underlying right after the note starts to die.
