Need help with pickup ID

Got this 84 Explorer a while back, and I've always been curious as to what pickups were in it. Opened it up and took a couple of pics. The bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan with DDJ on the sticker, which translates as a Duncan Distortion wound by Maricela Juarez. The neck pickup is the head-scratcher. It's got double cream bobbins, which leads me to believe it's a Dimarzio, but the sticker on the back reads JN-M. I can't find anything on the web as to what this might be. Any ideas?

Re: Need help with pickup ID

Yeah, I just double checked the Duncan site, it is indeed a Jazz neck. Considering the fact that it has the sticker on a plain baseplate AND that it's double cream, it's a really old one at that. Very cool find!!

Labels - Labels built before 2002 - Seymour Duncan/Basslines

Re: Need help with pickup ID

Thanks alot. I wouldn't have guessed it to be a duncan, because it was double cream. It's much different than the DDJ one. That one has the logo on the baseplate and no braided wire. See?

Re: Need help with pickup ID

Yeah, that's what marks the JN M as an older one, no logo on the plate. that JN M sticker is 100% Duncan. If it was Dimarzio, the plate would be brass colored. Dimarzio coils look different, too.

Braided wire is common on the Jazz model pickups, tho. The DD has four conductor wire, hence no braided on that one.

Re: Need help with pickup ID

There are a lot of double cream Duncans around, and you can still order them from Duncan. They just aren't a regular production color and will arrive with a cover on them to skirt the Dimarzio trademark.

Re: Need help with pickup ID

That's good to know. Been thinking about giving my 98 standard a Page look with a double cream bridge pickup, and I like SDs

yep. Duncan, at one point, paid DiMarzio for the rights to use double cream bobbins without having to issue a cover. Maybe the timeframe would of been the 80s?

BTW, your white Gothic V is sweet.

Just tell your dealer you want "light solder" on a shop floor custom and that will get you double cream. I recommend Welcome to Wymore Guitars - Quality Products at Affordable Prices , the owner John is a regular Duncan forum member, gives Duncan forums members discounts, and is very in the know about ordering double creams. He'll hook you up.
