BB Pickup selection/selector help

Hello all

My first post here and hopefully not my last. I am VERY new to guitar mods but have been playing for a number of years. I managed to purchase a BB for Ģ250 new and need some advice on both pickup selection and if what I am after is even possible.

I have taken my BB in to have some new pickups installed. I made the mistake of going for a Jazz/Alnico II Pro combo with the middle pickup disabled but have since read on this and other forums that the Alnico II Pro is not the best bridge pickup and is not very hot.

Now I love the Jazz pickup as its nice and bright, I also like the Alnico as even though I do not play G n' R's music (although I love the band and Slash is my favourite guitarist) I love Slash's tone.

I am also now driven to the JB as on this forum, it is held in high esteem and the clips I hear sound clear and cut through even on high gain sounds.

So I have a dilemma;

Jazz/mid off/JB
Alnico/mid off/JB
Jazz/Alnico/JB
Alnico/Jazz/JB

Which in your opinion would be the best tonal selection out of the 4 on the BB?

Now the first two are a case of easy wiring and here I am just looking for anyone who has either of these 2 combinations and what they think.

The last 2 leave me with a toggle problem and I am trying to avoid a strat style toggle, now I know their if a 5/6 way rotary switch but I am unsure if that is even practical.

Soooooo......please bear with me

3 way selector with each pickup having its own position on the toggle (so no blending involved between pickups)

or

A 3 way toggle with a push pull, so working on the Jazz/Alnico/JB option it would be;

Push pull in; postion 1 for Jazz, position 2 for Jazz/JB, position 3 for JB
Push pull out turns the Jazz off and the Alnico on; position 1 for Alnico, position 2 for Alnico/JB, position 3 for JB.

Is this even posible as I like the idea of keeping the guitar looking authentic by not removing the toggle switch and I feel I would get some really interesting options out of the guitar as the brightness of the Jazz will be complimented with the warmer sound of the Alnico.

I tend not to play a certain style of music but I do write anything from sparkling clean to crunchy rhythms to extreme distortion but I am not interested in nailing one particular sound, I am just after a clear clean sound, biting crunch, heavy rhythm and a nice clear lead sound.

Well I really look forward to hearing all your opinions and probably all your corrections to my selection

Take care

Re: BB Pickup selection/selector help

OK an update for anyone considering a reply.

I have fell in love with the Alnico Pro in the neck position. This is a must but were to place it?

The JB in the bridge is a definite so as for the Jazz and the Alnico how would you place them? Jazz neck in neck, Alnico neck in middle or Alnico neck in neck and Jazz neck in middle?

Or would you not bother with a middle pickup? If this is the case then I'll be opting for the Alnico/JB.

Any advice would be fantastic.

Thank you

Re: BB Pickup selection/selector help

Iīm not sure about the pickup cavity on a Black Beaty but if itīs a big hole i guess itīs just to change place of the pickups.
Changing selector wire is easy.
So just try all 3 of them.
Who knows, the Jazz might be a great middle pickup.
