Sound clips dont really do anybody's pickups justice on a computer, mo matter who makes them or who play's them. I am pleased that you liked the clips, they do have a great tone on my amp. I hope you enjoy yours.

Mine were here in maybe a week, week and 1/2. I dont rush Spence on my orders tho. Price I'm not sure, check the web site but I think around $260.00 or there abouts. They will be worth the wait tho Allman, also try some of my personal favorites, the SHEDZEPs. They are just nasty.

Re: ShedPickups

How do Shed's compare to Throbaks?
Besides the price difference and the fact that Throbaks are made on the special machine...I don't care about that all I care about is tone, tone, tone.

I don't think it's a good thing to compare. especially when the winders in question have invested so much time and research into there products. I would be very happy with both. The Leesona is a strong marketing image, I wonder why Seymour doesn't publicise his winder more ? maybe he doesn't think it matter's that much.

Hello by the way.

Re: ShedPickups

Welcome NTT, I agree the Leesona is THE original PAF winder but do you really think that the actual winder has much to do with tone as wire, magnets, bobbin material, base, studs, spacers and screws do? Besides, is the Leesona winding identical wire the same exact way (Tension and winding pattern plus over/under-winds) as they did in the 50's and 60s? I believe there are several clone PAF pups today that sound as good and maybe even better than originals.

Well, it was one of the winding machines. ThroBak's machine was never in the Gibson factory though. He couldn't get it to work with it's original tensioners or counters so it's not operating like the Gibson ones did. It's probably an absolutely hopeless machine especially as it was never intended to operate with 42 AWG. He reckons it overruns and ends up creating it's own scatter pattern. I would argue therefore that you might as well handwind, provide a consistent tension by hand and do your own scatter.

Essentially, if you want PAFs made on a genuine Gibson Leesona you'd be better off going to Seymour Duncan. Even so he's modified his too and we don't hear much about it. But he has been making PAFs much much longer than ThroBak.

For the record, there's no comparison between what I make and what ThroBak makes. He disagrees with every piece of conventional wisdom when it comes to pickups and just bangs on about Leesonas all day and night.

I use very well researched methods and materials and wind all the pickups myself. There's no substitute for actually taking the old PAFs apart regardless of whether they are working or not. Sacrifices have to be made.

Re: ShedPickups

One of the reasons i didn't think it was good to compare was because i know they have strong opinions and could see it turning ugly. I also believe if the Leesona floats your boat then you might as well go with Seymour's. There wound on the machine that did wind paf coil's, and you get Butyrate bobbins as well.

I'd side with Spence in a knowledge shoot-out in the subject of pickups. make of that what you will. But i feel Jon (Throbak) has a more business orientated ideology, by that i mean, fingers in a lot of pie's. Does that impact on his pickups. i don't know. But with Spence's work i feel it gets his full attention, and is not just the next money making avenue to go down.

Re: ShedPickups

That is exactly what I thinking. Man I wish we could get some more posts of Shed's creations. If the pickups sound half as good as the they look then I'd say we have a keeper!

Spence do the shed zeppelins use a paf daddy in the neck? What are the measurements for these pups?

I can tell you that the Shed Zeps use an A4 neck and A5 bridge, the rest is just some Spence MOJO.
