Cool, do you know what the outputs measured? Are your Skatterbranes hotter?

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

Flickoflash, thanks for the info regarding the construction of the pickups, and thanks to Stowburst as well for his comments regarding his experience tone- wise with the A2's.

This is the kind of info I was looking for. It sucked that I hade to wade thru some negative stuff just to get some unbiased info, but that's how it goes sometimes.

I see now that the LPF surcharge has been removed along with the pic of the solder joints.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

I just put Skatterbrane RAW PAFs in my latest project and while I haven't played it as much as I'd like to due to the buffer eating my finish. My initial reaction is they are outstanding pickups. They had clarity at lower volumes, a crisp attack, and broke up nicely when pushed. I did not remove the covers or do any investigation other than my research before purchasing.

Again, that's my initial reaction based on about fifteen minutes. I expect to play a lot in the next week and will update this, both here and on the build thread in the Luthier's Corner.

My other humbuckers are Classic 57s (4 guitars), SD antiquities (1 guitar) and PRS (1 guitar - a PRS) and I intend to compare them all.

I have heard that they are great pups, I'd love to hear some sound clips.

What's your point? It shows that you're observant...

When cleaning up the thread they were probably in one of the offending posts.

How about reposting them? If they are on his website, then they should be easy for anyone to find, right?

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

Hey BB, The pics have been removed from the site. A good thing really. Judging by the recent pics the quality has improved. But I still don't think they are worth $450.

I've seen the pic's of the Shed's made in Wales

At $235 a set plus shipping I'd try these any day.

edit: I've checked and all of my original post are still intact.

Skatterbrane has removed the pictures from his website.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

Great playing, but it sounds like a direct to desk recording.

Did you see the clips on YouTube?

I know not that great quality, but they sound pretty good to me. All the clips I've heard of Skatterbranes have been outstanding.

I still remember when I didn't pull the trigger on a set on the 'bay for $150...

But, yes, for the regular going rate for the Skatterbrane's there are a lot of great options out there.

Yeah the youtube stuff is okay but not great quality. The playing is cool just the recording is not great.

The clips Flick posted sound like they are recorded direct to desk from the TSLs DI. Again the playing is cool but the TSL has a habit of imparting a Marshall tone to everything.

Sorry flick I don't understand what you are getting at.

The new clip you've posted does have a consistency in tone to the TSL clip, they sound quite Fat and Raw.

Thanks treddingjr, your work on that Guitar truly amazing. Unfortunately the camera mic doesn't do the tone any justice. It does sound like it could cut through though in the mix.

I can hear the same raw edge as in the previous posts.

Has any one got these recorded in a studio situation?

You know amp + cab (or combo) + mic etc..

e.g Marshall 18 Watt, Beta 57.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

I've only heard good things about his pick ups. I quite liked what I've hear on the net, too, but that's a crappy indication.

If they were available cheap, I'd grab 'em.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

i still have mine (an A2 set with covers) and still love 'em. haven't got any recordings though.

the last 'bucker set i had that i really liked before this was an SD antiquity set. sold those with the guitar they were on about 6 years ago (when i switched to teles) so i can't really compare the two sets now. but i liked the antiquity set then and i like these now.

my other LP has '59/JB and the 'branes are definitely more open sounding. so much so that, at first, you'd think they're louder/hotter than the other set til you realize its the way the voicing is more spread out instead of focused near the mids. the guy who sold them to me (got them second hand), actually thought they were too bright for his tastes. but i guess, coming from playing teles exclusively, a little brightness doesn't bother me.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

I missed the boat, but that's not a bad thing. I have a set of SBs in my SL slash sig. Sounds good, but the guitar needs some love since I havent played it in a while. I was just thinking the other day, that I need to try those in my collings. I think I'll remain blissfully ignorant and just use the darn things.

Have three sets of BKs, a bunch of WBs, 2 sets of WCRs, Fralins, SDs up the wazoo, 2 sets of Sheptones...it's all good. I really need to settle and just leave the pups in a guitar, but I change them a ton. Messing with the sheps again now. Some very nice stuff there. Waiting on some WB minihums for a B3 pheonix. That should be cool. I'm sort of set on guitar/amp/effect. Now I just switch pups constantly.

That's odd. The pups in the picture are white, the text says Albino Zebra. What the heck is an albino zebra...a white horse with red eyes? I actually googled one to see what it looks like...I need a life.

Dimarzio owns the rights to double cream or double white in regards to the colour of the bobbins. That's why a lot of winders don't have them listed for sale, but will actually make them. So albino zebra just means double white/cream bobbins.

Albinos, reguardless of species, are without pigment. An albino zebra, would also be without pigment...or all white. (there would be no black stripes)

Skatterbrane Pickups - Review

Hey guys. My name is Lee Moore and I'm a long-time member on the LPF and other Forums. I'm a new member and I'm excited to find this Forum.

As a newbie, I'd thought I'd contribute by posting a review of Rod Kinkade's Skatterbrane Humbucker Pickups.

I purchased the Skatterbrane RAW NICKEL SET w/ A5 Mags about three months ago and installed them immediately into my prized '59RI that was overhauled by RS Relic and includes a real '59 Gibbie Wiring Harness.

https://www.skatterbrane.com/ORDERING_AND_PAYMENT.html

Review:

As a huge PAF "s/ut", I like to think I've heard, tested and owned everything out there. I've used the RS Relic 'True Tone '60's', Fralins, Antiquities, Timbuckers, Rolphs, Wagner Pups (Fillmores, Crossroads, Goodwoods, Darkbursts), Gibson Pups (BurstBuck'rs I, II and III, Classic '57's, 490R/T), Seth Lovers, and Duncan Custom Shop Spec'd PAFs.

While they all have characteristics that are desireable and pleasing, NONE OF THEM HAVE THE TOTAL "VIBE" OF THE SKATTERBRANE A5's. Not only do the Skatterbranes have punch, clarity and warmth, they also have the subtle honk and double-tones of the real PAFs. I attribute it to Rod's parts selection and hand-picked magnets - the wind is wonderful, as well, but I think when it's all combined, the synergies emerge into PAF magic.

The bridge pickup, which is a lower output wind (just like some PAFs that varied in range), can do a convincing Duane from the Fillmore East....no lies.

The neck pickup, with the tone rolled back, can nail Duane's solo in Dreams from the studio albums...again, no lies.

The middle position.....well, it's just sick.

Conclusion:
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE PICKUPS for your Les Paul if you want the "new" PAF vibe (e.g. go back in time to 1959 and buy a set from Gibson). While I haven't test-driven the A2's - which I'm not a fan of in general - I'm sure they envoke a similar tone.

The Skatterbrane Raw Nickel Set w/ A5's is absolutely the best thing that's happened towards my quest for Duane's tone. Lord knows he's got some good PAF vibes!
