Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

I could think of a dozen boutique pups that sound great that I would prefer than a set of skatterbranes.

His top spec pick up is $450 a set.

I rather have a set of these:

Bare Knuckle Pickups, North Devon, UK - Hand Wound Guitar Pickups

A bargain for just $285 a set.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

Let me re-phrase the question to avoid any additional "stuff"...to those of you who liked them (and the general consensus was that they were really good), did you keep 'em because they sounded good, or yank 'em and look for something else because they just didn't do it for you?

In other words good pickups or no??

Brand new A2's, $200 to my door, not off of e-bay.

Looking at the solder joints holding the covers on, I'd say no.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

I have been in the group when he had a pair of his pickups passed around among MLP members. They definitely didn't look messy like the solder points above. Where's that photo from?

I liked them when I tested them in my Burny. I ended up not buying them because I like the additional "sparkle" that Antiquities, SD '78 and my WCR crossroads have.

I am a little sad that this turned sour. Myself, I really liked the passaround set for testing. I would even buy one that has been passed around and has a couple nicks on it. I wish more pickup makers would do this. Buying and selling used pickups is more effort and for the pickup maker it's lost money. Why have me track down a used set when you can sell me a new one?

I didn't have time to follow MLP closely and I would really like to know what happened, can somebody give me a link (in p.m. if the blowup was too bad to post ) or a short description of what blew up?
Thanks.

No, as I believe it this thread is about the quality of and tone of skatterbrane pups

I posted the pictures from the official skatterbrane website as a reference to the quality you can expect.

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

Well as I said I liked them. What I'm looking for is a certain quality that very few boutique or non-boutique pickups have and they didn't, so I ended up not buying.

I have one or a pair of most of the boutique makers by now, bought used when I could get them for a resellable price.

I don't want to compare them publically because I didn't have enough time with them yet and only tested them in one guitar so far.

But, as mentioned earlier, SD's Antiquities, the '78/EVH and the WCR Crossroads all have a certain "sparkle", so far I like them better than the others. There is some airyness, a bit more happening in them. And they come our right in the output and EQ department. The Ant isn't that great in the bridge, though.

The explanation could be as simple as just being different styles of potting (are the WCRs completely unpotted?) or even differences in humidity in my guitar room while going through them. Hence my reluctance to post a ranklist.

All I'm saying is the above ones definitly have "it" and you can't go wrong with them.

I've always liked the SD antiquities. I'll have to check out the others you've mentioned.

I would jump on the Bareknuckle before dropping $450 on ANY set of 'cloned' pups.

Hell, for $125 you could get MLP member KevinT's custom made to your spec's right now on ebay. I've never used his pups but for that price on a pair of PAF style clones...might as well try it!

Re: Skatterbrane pickups??

I'm gonna throw in a hand grenade here..

I have some A2s, I think they sound GREAT and I have had a lot a pups, Ttops, Buckers, 57 Classics, Bare Knuckles, Tim Buckers, Duncans etc My A2s are the best out of them all..seriously..

After the R0 thread a lot of people were questioning his pups and quite rightly so, saying they could be Stew Macs etc.. I had some emails from LPF members who wanted to buy my set just to take apart and check.. I got an offer for a lot of cash too.

I'm not sticking up for a blagger but MY pickups sound great, I'm talking about the tone.. if they are Stew Mac's then they are magic, if they are skatterbrane they are magic, if they are somthing else they are magic..

A lot of people love the sound of my pups until I tell them what make they are.. then they try to dislike them..

I said my pups were great from day 1, it wasn't until the R0 stuff that I was reading that they could be somthing they were not.. Looking at some pics of Stew Macs and looking at mine they looked just like them..

I sent Rod email saying, no bullshit are they stew macs or not, and he said that he made them.

Where do the small makers get pickup bases from, anyway? Can't think everybody has their own sheet metal press going.

Well, Stewmac has them. Just wondering whether people expect small makers to have unique bases made for them exclusively.

And I honestly can't think that it pays off to make your own plastic bobbins as a small maker, and their impact on sound is probably NIL.

With the baseplates I could negotiate, obviously shape and material influence the final shape of magnetic field.

I will be posting some pics a lil later of the findings . Yes the bobbins are most likely generic & the same as most winder use .

No I just think that if you can hide behind your name here and make assumption and accusations against someone who's real name and image is outed. Last picture is the same details as above.

On a final note is that rod winds his own pickups and that they are enamel wire where stew mac is using the cheaper poly wire.

Picture is Rods pickup. Standard Industry Bobbins that many use. Screws are Mojotone. Baseplate the same as all the others are using.
