Habaneros?
Hey it's been a while but I finally started coming back to this site reading about one of my favorite subjects! (LPs)
Anyway, I'm sure I'm the only one here that doesn't know this, but what is the WB Habanero? I only saw it mentioned for the 1st time today and I can't find them on the WB site...

Re: Habaneros?
Legend has it that these were wound on a quiet full moon night. One coil was wound with hair from the Cajun Witch Marie LeVeau, the other from bailing wire from Cletus' shine still. The polepieces and slugs were made from an old Ford pickup rusting in a peach orchard in Georgia. There was more magic and some incantations, I believe....
That was fun! Actually, this is how I think it went down. Please feel free to correct me if I am off. I believe these were a custom wind for forum member JLH. He wanted something like the PAFs you hear in certain southern rock recordings. That raunchy, tone dripping, sizzling sound. I feel that they represent a certain type of PAF that would have had an early breakup and the nice growl, sizzle, rich harmonic content and beauty of a classic pickup. I have never had a pickup quite like this. They sound famous. They sound old, but in a great way. Anyway, if you look around this thread: http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/pick...pickups-3.html you will find out more. These are also referred to as the Honest to Goodness or H&G Habs. Many of us think that these should definitely be listed on his site as an option! These are simply incredible. The Firewaters I got rock, but there's just something organic about these. They have a great soul and a good ol' boy attitude! Let the barfights begin!!!!

Re: Habaneros?
Nice description.
I've replaced the neck pickup on my LP with a Seymour Duncan that I like, but the bridge is still the stock Gibson. Eventually I wanna replace it with something, but I'm not sure what yet. Do you like the Habs bridge pickup or would you say you favor the neck? Basically any further info on them is appreciated.

Re: Habaneros?
I like them both equally, but if I could only have one it would be the bridge I think. I have only had them a short while, and my descriptions probably could be better. Anyone else care to chime in?

FWIW, I don't think I really understood the term "sizzle" until I got these!

Re: Habaneros?
Eddie, It's JLH, WOW your description of the Habs is perfect
Thank You!!!!!5F6-A, You better get ready, what kind of amp are you using????? Legend has it: Will and I have developed these based on "Dirty South" Les Paul /Marshall Tone, such as heard on the ABB Fillmore album, It was simple, I challenged Will with what I wanted and needed in tone, I use Marshall amps. The actual sound clip was from a band called "Grinderswitch" , the Baddest Southern rock band IMO, the guitar player and his tone is the late Drew Lombar, the album is titled "Honest to Goodness" .The original pups were not as hot as the finals, these ( the originals) were simply called Honest to Goodness ( H&G's) for there replication of this tone, however, I desired more HEAT from the original , as can be heard on the next Grinderswitch album "Pullin Together", so I named them Habeneros as I am true Chili Head . I sent him sound clips, he wound and sent me pups, this started a year ago, these have been dialed in by the man himself WB !!!!!! However the truth has never been told but rumor has it these were wound on a quiet full moon night. One coil was wound with hair from the Cajun Witch Marie LeVeau, the other from bailing wire from Cletus' shine still. The polepieces and slugs were made from an old Ford pickup rusting in a peach orchard in Georgia. There was more magic and some incantations, I believe.... WB's ability to nail this tone by hand and build is a testimony to his talent, his desire to build to the customers request and custom wind is a credit to his commitment to quality and integrity. If we can just keep him from these strange late night visits to the Wooly Swamp, he may have time to actually market these Habeneros on his site, however the last I saw of him was on an air boat heading SOUTH. Please let me know how you like the pups, JLH |

Re: Habaneros?
I suppose I'm still in the stage of searching for what "sound" I really like for a bridge pickup. So therefore I try to gather as much info and listen to any new pickups I hear/read about.
Anyway, any opinions on what possible WB pickup would best suit my style of playing? (click myspace music page below, "Callused" is the only song that truly represents me, the others may as well but they are just as they are titled: Me "Goofing Around".)

Re: Habaneros?
Eddie, I have just discovered WB's secret recipe for the wind on the Habs. You must mix the inert gas of two KT66's with a touch of Melinda' XXXX reserve Hot sauce, scoville rating of sauce must be greater than 1 million plus, this I have discovered is his potting juice, Evidence suggests it melds the hair of the bobbin wound with Marie's hair with the bobbin of the copper wire from cletus's whiskey still together and creates the SIZZLE, I discovered this while playing a smokin lead, the first table in the bar was eating chicken wings, snatched my guitar and began to use the sizzle sauce for there Hot Wings .
Stay tuned , Rumor has it WB's new release of hot wing sauce is on the horizon, What shall we name it ??????? |

Re: Habaneros?
Just spent the better part of 2 hours plugged into the THD with the Classic. I actually considered selling this guitar since I played the R7 a lot more. It is a definite keeper now! It's like a caged animal with a set of bolt cutters! Every time I read one of these Habanero posts, I just have to plug it in again! Man, it sounds sooooo good! Will is a friggin' genious!!! Props to you too, Jeff!!! Thank both of you for my favorite pickups!!!

Re: Habaneros?
I have to say my covered WB set consists in a matched pair of a neck custom Overtones humbucker ( reversed wired for an out-of-phase sound when used with the bridge ) and a custom HG Habanero.
What I'm after is a raunchy, tight, southern, greasy, fat bridge pickup and a singing, soulful, clear, round neck. I promise clips and pics. They'll go nicely with a pair of Vqs provided by opur common friend HolyGrail. It's ever so good to be a part of the MLP family!!

Re: Habaneros?
A little off topic but I finally put Vitamin Qs on my WB VTPHs this week. I'm very close to Billy Gibbons' tone. I've been figuring out Neighbor, Neighbor this week. I'm very close to their tone on the first album.
I can't wait to hear your Habs Bro! |

Re: Habaneros?
I replaced my Hovland .022@1000v with the vitamin Q's and as a friend put it, they added a great "color" to the tone. I am using 500k audio taper CTS pots. E-mail Hal, he's got great answers to this stuff. Better than I can explain. The tones were more useable when I switched from stock to the Hovlands. The Vit Q's are all that and more musical sounding too.
