Which single coils for strat copy?

I have a Washburn WS-4.. it's my first guitar, and I want to give it a major upgrade..

The stock pickups aren't that bad actually, but they get a little too much buzz, and I think the wiring is just bad (I haven't taken care of the guitar as I should).. but I want to upgrade it.. I figured I have my LP w/ the emg setup for metal/harder stuff.. but even this cheap strat copy gets some great blues/country rock sounds!

I was thinking maybe fender noiseless or maybe:
Buy Seymour Duncan California 50 s Single Coil Set SSL-1 at Musician's Friend

I basically want something that's much different from my LP.. are there any single coils you'd recommend?

The next time I need to re-string it, I will take the pickguard off and see how it's routed (maybe I'll have an S-S-H setup), but I've never taken the guitar apart.

I have the noiseless in my EC strat and they are fantastic, great for rock, blues, metal ect., can't go wrong with them, IMO

hmm.. what about the hot noiseless (jeff beck)? I saw they're about $20 more than the regular noiseless for the set.

Money is not a problem, but this is a $200 strat copy... it'd be like putting a Ferrari engine into a Ford.

Take a listen to my Vintage 60s and Phatty sets.
I think you'll be impressed with both the tones and prices.

Re: Which single coils for strat copy?

I'll have to check out the vid/sounds after work (blocked @ work). I'm looking more towards a lazy solution.. i.e. pre-wired pickguard - lol.. seems like that means just solder the ground and the input.

I could never sell the guitar though.. it's my first.

Re: Which single coils for strat copy?

I'm not a blues man, so for me there are two iconic Strat roles - a surf machine and the staff of rock gods at Woodstock.

So for my Strats I bougt two Fender Custom Shop sets, a '54 and a '69. No regrets. Both are modded for bridge-over-all. Highly recomended.

So ... it doesn't matter how much you've paid for it ... and your analogy (Ferrari engine in a Ford) isn't correct, because the immaterial value is more than the $200 bucks ...
What would you say if I would recommend you to buy a crappy cheap somewhat-strat on ebay and take the no-name pups for your guitar - just to keep the low value ... ???

Do you want an upgrade actually?? OK ... you'll have to spend a small amount no matter what you've paid for your Strat long time ago ...

BTW - the noiseless are excellent pups ... but there are also so many others ( as mentioned above ) ... and the Apaches sound awsome ...

Re: Which single coils for strat copy?

Yea, they definitely sound good. My only issue is that I spend xx amount on something great, but since this is a cheaper guitar, I won't notice as much of an impact, if let's say, I put these in a real strat.

Again, I have no issue dropping 150-200 on pickups/pickguard/wires/pots/etc, but will the fact that it's a strat copy (korean made) have a major impact on the overall result?

Re: Which single coils for strat copy?

I've not used any of their single coils, but the GFS Humbuckers are rock solid. Can't imagine a better price for good pickups. They seem perfect for your project.

Re: Which single coils for strat copy?

I've been listening to lots of samples and I'm torn between the BG Pups v60s or p90s.. I like they have a wired pickguard option too heh (although I think I want a black pickguard)..hmm decisions, decisions!

I asked a buddy of mine to look at the site and he's pretty much convinced me to get a p90 in the bridge and then phatties in neck and mid, so I guess P90/Phatty/Phatty is the naming convention.

I will message you about specifics sometime this week.

Copperhead pickups are as good as it gets less expensive than most independant winders.

I don't generally go for cleared Strat bodies, but THAT is beautiful! I'm a fan of Fender CS '54s for a classic Strat sound.
