Installed my Wolfetone Marshallhead...My Pup Quest
I like it a lot!
I decided a while back not to buy a Marshallhead set in fear that not have wax potting would be an issue. I am on a pickup quest (buying a bunch to test in all my guitars) and a used uncovered Marshallhead is what I picked up first. I installed it in an '07 Standard, replacing a BG Darkbucker. The BG was an improvement over the stock BB Pro. Nice bite to it and made the guitar really cut through. The Marshallhead improved things a few more notches. Overall there is more presence and body to the tone. Thicker while still having great clarity. More bottom end punch and a really nice growl to it. I did not have any unwanted feedback...hoping that holds up in the full band environment. The pups do breath a lot and are very musical with the ability to grab good feedback easily. It is on the brighter side, but definitely not harsh. Really nothing the EQ of the amp can't dial back. When I get a chance I am going to try it in my Heritage Cherry Traditional as that guitar is a bit darker and might be a better match although I do like it so far in the Standard. My bench mark is my Goldtop Traditional with 6707 wound Habaneros. I noticed right away that the Marshallhead was on par with that extra body and presence of the Hab. Brighter and maybe voiced a little more towards the upper mids than the Hab....could also be a difference in the guitars. BTW I am playing through a modified Marshall DSL 50 into a 1960 cab w/V30s and G12H30s. Red channel OD1 with gain pretty high. For anyone that cares I will be testing out a bunch of different pickups over the coming weeks. I will put my thoughts about them out there and maybe help anyone that has a similar setup to mine. Others I have coming are: Bare Knuckles Black Dog set Bare Knuckles Nailbomb bridge WCR Fillmore Set I have my eye on some others as well and will be turning over the ones that don't work for me in order to try out different stuff.

Re: Installed my Wolfetone Marshallhead...My Pup Quest
Loved it live. I did not have any issues with controlling feedback. The Marshallhead crunches and punches and really sings nicely. I am going to move it over to my HC Traditional asap and drop the Bare Knuckle Black Dog set in the Standard.

Re: Installed my Wolfetone Marshallhead...My Pup Quest
Hi, I'm going back and forth between buying the Marshallhead set or the Black Dog set for my 1997 LP Standard, which is a somewhat bright guitar. I am looking for a great classic rock tone, with thickness and sustain and a high end that is not harsh, but definitely has some sting to it -- not just pure sweetness and light! Since you have had both sets in your Standard, could you please comment on the comparison? Thanks! Pete

The Black Dog is probably a tad beefier in the mids, but is smoother and doesn't have the aggressive bite I found in the Marshallhead. Pretty musical pup as well with good sustain. I personally liked the Marshallhead just a bit more because of its raw aggressive bite. If it was thicker I probably would keep it. The Black Dogs really worked well in my Cherry Traditional that is very picky about pups. They have been replaced with a set of Guitarforce RebelFires. I think I am going to put a RebelFire permanently in my Standard too.
