What's your Pickup Combination?

Heya All. Long time lurker here. Thanks for all the great info.

I've got an '05 Standard and am considering changing my pickups. It currently has a SD Seth Lover in the Neck and a SD Custom Custom in the bridge. I love the Seth lover but am not as happy with the Custom Custom. It's a bit too sterile for my taste.

I'm looking for a combo to cover the range of Zepplin, Skynard, Allman Bro's/Dickey Betts to ZZ Top.

I'm also just curious what others are using.

So here's the question, what's your guitar, pickup combo, amp of choice and style of music you play?

Mine is:
Guitar: 05 Faded Standard
Neck: Seth Lover
Bridge: Custom Custom
Amp: Suhr Badger
Style: Blues, Classic, Southern, and Hard Rock.

Re: What's your Pickup Combination?

Mine's an '01 R9, I've been using a set of Voodoo 59s for quite awhile.
Both AL3 mags, both right on 7.8K, neck has the PG mag flip.
Classic, southern, a bit of blues.

Re: What's your Pickup Combination?

My fave combination is one pickup at the neck, and one at the bridge, for a total of two pickups!

I'm planning to put this pic every time you make a "wise-ass" comment.
Would that be ok with you, Dennis?

That would be perfectly fine with me, as that is a great photo! Matter of fact, the kid on the right looks a lot like me when I was little!

I love Burstbuckers (not Pros), they're phenomenal pickups.
The only aftermarket stuff I've tried are Wolfetone Dr. Vintage & Marshallheads. Great pickups!!

Re: What's your Pickup Combination?

I'd go for a Seth Lover in the bridge and call it good.

Mine is a Studio Lite with a Gibson 498R in the neck and a Duncan JB in the bridge. Great combo for the type of sounds you are looking for.

Eef is humorous. He just doesn't realize it.

For the record, I thought it was funny.

I guess I'll address the original post.

Edwards 98-LTS with Wolfetone Dr. Vintage in bridge and neck.

Gibson Historic G0 with Guitarforce Rebel 1's in the bridge and neck.

A p90 and a p90... or just a p90... 3 p90s might be okay too.

That is how I intended it. At least I didn't give a recommendation of a pickup combination I have never tried personally.

I also am not hiding behind a silly pic of Bush with Obama's face. You guys all know what I look like, and I am sorry for the horror!

Mine too! Except on those days when I only want one...

I've got stock Gibsons in my '92 Std and '04 R8 (I really don't know which model pups that translates to). The '92 HBs have always toyed with me - one day they're fine and the next they seem muddy unless I crank up the treble on the amp. The '04 HBs don't seem to come across that way - they're consistenly right where I want them to be. I'm sure that's just me, because that difference doesn't make sense, but that's how I hear 'em.

When I'm feeling lazy and simple, or want the best cleans and crispest mids, I play my Jr. with one SD Antiquity P-90 (bridge, of course). If I had to pare things down to just one guitar/pickup, it'd be that one. For the same level of overdrive (and plain old volume) as the HBs, the amp has to be set higher, but otherwise the P-90 gives me everything I want with creative use of the guitar controls and picking positions.

Based on the above, I am planning on putting HB-sized P-90s in the '92. For my sounds (very similar to what you've described), I really think P-90s are the schnitz, but I doubt I'll ever even consider replacing the HBs in the R8. I love 'em.

My "amp" is a POD X3 live parked permanently on a Variac'd Plexi model as tweaked by Lincoln Brewster (thanks, B-squared ). From near-acoustic through Communication Breakdown tones without touching the amp controls, just the guitar's.

Isn't that Harpozep's? It is indeed a beauty !

I have lots of different pickup combos, all for classic rock and blues. Some of my favorites are...

My trusty old Deluxe with a stock mini humbucker in the neck and a Shed PAF daddy in the bridge

My Warmoth Esquire-Gib with a Gibson 490t bridge pickup

My '55 Junior. P-90 goodness. My '77 Special as well.

My Dot with a '57 classic neck/ Seth Lover bridge.

My G-400 sounds pretty damned good with the other Shed PAF Daddy as well. Finally gave that guitar the voice I wanted for it!

Re: What's your Pickup Combination?

I ripped out what was in my top three and now run sheptone tributes in two of them and a sheptone BK set in the other. Tried lollar, wcr, wb, wolfetone, guitarforce, BKs, assorted gibbs and SDs, others I have forgotten, many sets from many makers. Sheps do it for me. Done looking for pickups finally.

I take it one step further. I put a push pull pot on the neck tone and use that to cross wire the pups in what I like to call "Oprah" mode (aka wide or fat). The screw coil of each pup is instead joined in series with the slug coil of the other pup-making for single coilish sounds but with hum cancelling.
