cheers!

Larry clearly states that those new 36th aniversary pickups ARE NOT vintage replicas but rather pickups that uses modern technology to get something similar to the vintage sound in modern guitars.

Thank's EEF! I'd seen this before on youtube, but it's great you posted it here, esp. after all that debate.

Personally, I think the 36 Anni's are great sounding pickups. And Hilario is spot on: Larry clearly wasn't trying to reproduce the PAF. I'd also note that his particular Les Paul, (gorgeous guitar...) is really fat sounding, but clear. But it's fatter than many original PAF's I've heard. That said, it could just be the cranked AC-15, which are pretty thick sounding amps when turned up.

Anyway, nice post.

Re: Guitar World's Paul Riario talks with Larry DiMarzio

Howdy,

I've got a 36th Anni PAF in the bridge of my ES-335, along with an Air Classic in the neck. Together, they're an improvement over the SD '59s I'd had in my 335.
The 36th (bridge) is certainly "middy" compared to the '59 (bridge). At lower volumes, it's somewhat.."nasal" sounding, which isn't a bad thing. At higher volumes through my Carmen Ghia, the 36th is completely nasty.
In the middle position with the Air Classic, my Carmen Ghia gives up some pleasing Clean tones at low volume. Think classic British Invasion. And the clean tones have more harmonic complexity and touch sensitivity than the '59s. Steve Blucher recommended the Air Classic (n) and 36th Anni PAF (b) and I'm glad I went with his suggestion. Versatile P/U combination.
