Pickup for British Sound

What would be a good pickup for that old british rock sound?
The British sound has more mids and highs compared to the USA sound which is more bass & treble.
That´s the general difference

Re: Pickup for British Sound

The difference was mainly the difference between EL34s used in Marshalls ( UK ) and 6L6s used in america. Not the pickups to blame but rather the power amp valves, my friend.

Re: Pickup for British Sound

Ok thanks for the info.
But i guess there could be pickups that are voiced a little more with mids and highs.

Re: Pickup for British Sound

of course... but originally the difference came mainly from the amps. That was my point.
Many pickups offer that upper-midrange hump for example the BKP Holydiver is agood example if you like it hot.

Thanks

Re: Pickup for British Sound

I love Tri Sonics. Kent Armstrong makes a nice one. I've even seen a dual Tri-Sonic, (would that be a Hex-Sonic?) wired as a humbucker that I think Kent made in his Custom Shop.

Think the Shadows, or Brian May.

Brian May has a great rock sound
Hex-Sonic???
Would that be a humbucker with 6 mini blade coils?

No, that was just a real bad joke. 2 Tri-Sonics = 6 (hex) Sonic?

Bad, I know.

imagine a 6mini coil humbucker

Re: Pickup for British Sound

WB **** pickups and a treble booster is a great place to start. I have a D*A*M Red Rooster and a Analogman Beano Boost. Both really nice pedals to boost your mids and highs.

Check out Pete Biltoft's pickups at Vintage Vibe Guitars

He has a modular design that makes swapping magnets, or mixing and matching really easy. His pickups sound great, and incredibly made, and are a bargain in the boutique market.

I have a set of his humbuckers, and to experiment I've tried mixing a few different Alnico's, and even a Ceramic, to see what I get. A lot of the tones are really interesting and great for texture on a recording.

Weren't some of the earlier Marshalls (Clapton's for example) using the KT66 valve which didn't have the kink in the midrange that the 6L6 had?

Yes, the earlier Marshalls, (as wlel as the new Vintage Modern series,) used KT66's, which were designed to be a "perfect" 6l6 for audio uses. It has its own unique characteristics.

In fact, the early Marshall circuits were almost copies of Fender's Bassman circuit, (which was a Hammond Organ amp.)

If you plug a Bassman into a cabinet with Celestion, low wattage speakers, it'll sound pretty darn Marshall-y when cranked up.

That said, any amp with EL-84's or EL-34's is going to make a bigger difference in the British vs. American sound, than a set of pickups on its own.
