pickup surround repair

I replaced the pickups on my '79 standard recently, and rather than attempt it myself, I paid a guy in a reputable shop to do the job. I noticed when I examined it closely that the bridge pickup surround was scracked around the lower adjustment screw, a sort of circular crack. I phoned up the guy, who was absolutely fine about it, and we agreed that I'd wait a month or two to see if the bridge pickup was what I wanted sonically, and then bring it back for him to repair the pickup surround.

Couple of quezzies:
Does it sound repairable? Is it fairly normal for these to break on refiting a pickup? Would a replacement match the rest of the guitar or look slightly different?

Thanks!
