WB or WCRs?

I'm trying to decide between a set of WB ********* pups and the WCR American Steele set. I'm looking for a sweet vintage neck pup, and a hot (rock and metal-able) bridge pup. I know both set probably can do the job well. But what's the difference between the 2? Anyone can tell me? Or does anyone have first hand experience of any of these 2 sets?

Technically, I'm looking for something that handles nice sweet tones in the neck, where I can comfortably play old Santana, Gary Moore, Peter Green stuff without much tweaking, and high gain stuff like AlterBridge and Evanescence for the bridge with a metal pedal or a high gain distortion pedal.

Suggestions?

Re: WB or WCRs?

the ********* is a killer combo for what you describe. Alos you could ask for your own combination. My cool Overtones neck and hot ******** team works like a charm. Just tell Will.

Jim Wagnwer winds some mean pickups too.

Re: WB or WCRs?

I note more support for the WBs over the WCRs here. Is it the cost factor?

Re: WB or WCRs?

I love my WCRs, I think it's because Jim from WCR doesn't post here all the time that he's not supported in the same way. WB has a lot of backers promoting his stuff here.

Re: WB or WCRs?

I've tried several WB sets, and haven't tried any WCRs, so I cannot compare.

I can say that the WBs are outstanding pickups, and worth every penny.

Re: WB or WCRs?

Not enough people have tested both in the same guitar. It's a crapshot.

My experience so far is a nod towards WCR. I like the Crossroads better than the PG **** set. The crossroads has some sparkle in there that most other pickups are missing. It might be just a difference in potting, if the WCR is potted at all, but that's what I hear.

That's funny...my **** Greens absolutely scream, growl, and cry. They are some of the best pickups I've ever tried.

Yep... My initial complaint was that neither the Godwood or the ********* bridges gave me that modern feel I wanted. Then I heard the clips on the H&H set... "Ch-Ching!!!"

Will do... I'm only concerned, will they mud up in an LP? Will they be more suited in an HH bolt on?

Yeah, I got one of those when they came up on TGP.

Why?

Re: WB or WCRs?

Check with Jeff (Weldaar) on this board. He's tried almost every pup known to man. Most of the tone samples in the pup tone sticky are from him.

I have a set of WCR Green/Moore and 2 sets of the WB**** PG Set. I've tried both sets in my Tokai and the WBs sound far more balanced in that guitar. The WCRs were too hot and too low end heavy. In my Burny SG, the WCRs sound magical, whereas the WBs are heaven in my Tokai Love Rock. I wouldn't swap out either set in either guitar.

I think you are right... I always found Wagner's Greenie specs a tad too hot. But the SG obviously enjoyed the extra meat...

Re: WB or WCRs?

In general WCR pickups of similar type sounds a bit more pleasant and wider to my ears. We talk nuances what might be matter of taste, but somehow WCR offer classier sounds in several of my LPs and I definitelly opt for it.
Only pickup manufacturer that might compare 100% favorably to WCR is Bare Knuckle (Mule and Darkburst are simply pure magic from bith campus).
IMFHO Wagner's price is grounded by fact that guy makes best among the best pickups.

Yes, based on sound clips, I'd prefer the WCR Crossroads to the WB ********* neck pup. The WCR seems to be a tad sweeter, while the WB seems to be a little more in your face. Were I strictly going for a pure vintage tone, I'd go for WCRs, but the WB H&H set seems to be the one I'm looking for. I'm thinking rolling down on the volume knob on my would do the trick for more vintage like stuff. heh.
