Does it look like a original vintage DiMarzio SuperDistortion from the 70's?

Does this vintage DiMarzio pup looks original to you guys? I can get it pretty cheap. Wanna replace this one for the 498T in my LP Standard. I love the 498T, but I've heard the 70's DiMarzio SuperDistortion are very good pickups. I think Ace has used them in his LP's...

I didn't knew I was a high output pup lover, untill I got my Standard with the 498T in it. AThe 498T is somewhere around 13K OHMS and so the vintage DiMarzio is..

So, does this one looks original? From the 80's or 70's? No strange things?

And what's your overall opinion about those vintage DiMarzio SuperDistortions?

It looks like an old one to me. I like them better than the new ones. In the right guitar, they are great!

Yup, looks old. Just like the mid 70's Super Distortion I have up on ebay right now!

Re: Does it look like a original vintage DiMarzio SuperDistortion from the 70's?

Yup, looks like an old one!
I think newer ones have triangular feet.
FWIW: If it's a 4-conductor it's technically speaking a Dual Sound - same as a Super Distortion, but splitable.
I have a set in my aluminum neck Kramer - very loud & very 70s rock!

Enjoy!

Re: Does it look like a original vintage DiMarzio SuperDistortion from the 70's?

Here's an update. The guy didn't respond to my messages.

I found someone here on MLP who PM'ed me because he's selling a vintage DiMarzio SD wich he took out of his 1980 les paul standard in about 1992.

Here are the pics. Does this looks like a vintage SuperDistortion? Or does it look like a vintage Dual Sound?

I'm not buying now, just watching the market on 70's SDs.

Someone ought to bust Larry's chops and do a better replica of the old ones than he presently does, calling if the "Super Dis." ...but you can still get the old ones at a great price - for now.

Yea, they should make a reissue, square legged baseplate, unwaxed, single braided steel conductor Super distortion. It's 2012, the pickup debuted in 1972... Duh, Hello Larry, where's our 40th anniversary Super D??????? Even Seymour put out a butyrate bobbin JB and Jazz anniversary set!!!

Oh, and James, i have a couple more old Super D's (including one from the first year) if you ever wanna borrow one to do some mad scientology on it!

That is an early 80's or later example, judging by the triangular baseplate "feet."

Request a picture of it hooked up to an ohm meter. Recently bought 2 off the bay and both read 8.something instead of 13.something. People are selling things that they "think" they have. Ohm meter, baby!

I've send a message to DiMarzio Inc. and they've told me it's an '80s one.

Hrmmm.... I was once a knuckle head that painted an old cream Super Distortion black. Probably 20 years ago. You're only a state away. Could it be that you've got my old long-lost SD? That'd be a riot! Gloss black, just on the bobbin tops, excessively short lead unless it's been replaced? Probably beat to all hell too? I had that pickup in so many guitars that were traded back and forth among highschool friends. Did you happen to get it from someone who went to Sherwood?

Unlikely, but it'd be funny as all hell!

this can not be possible!

I was just cursing the idiot that cut the leads down to 3 inches and painted the b#$ch!

Yes, all scratched up painted on the tops!

Hey, here's a pic of it, check it out and let me know.

Does this look like you?

it has a red, black and bare (ground) leads.

Man, that really does look like it, but it is just a pickup. Hard to say. Where did you get it? Did it come in another guitar or in that Junior? I never owned a Junior but, like I said, that pickup I had was passed and traded around among several friends over the course of a few years. That pickup is somewhat of a legend among a few friends of mine if it's the same one. I found it in a bin of old Kramer parts at a little shop called Victor Litz in Gaithersburg sometime about 20 years ago.

One of those friends of mine is a member here. I'm going to forward him the link and see what he thinks also. We recently had a conversation about what happened to it.

If this DiMarzio does prove to be the same said SD previously owned by cooljuk is there anyway I can recover damages under the Preservation of Historical Artifacts Act?

Or maybe make him restore it to its original condition?

Wish my wife was here with her camera . . . there can only be one SD pup like this. The top of the bobbins are all scratched up.

Better yet, if it can be determined that it really IS the same one - I'll build you any custom ReWind Electric pickup you want in exchange for it. If that's THE ONE, I'd damn near trade my soul for it. So much nostalgia. I'm getting too hopeful. I need to step away for a few mintues. It's like finding out a friend you thought died years ago might be down the road.

Your description of the hook up lead sounds just right too.

How did you come to own this pickup?

Damn, just yesterday I clipped off the jack legged lead extensions, they were twisted together and the splices were covered in grey duct tape. I was going to take a pic of it to post but then saw this post which described my SD perfectly, so I never took the pics.

How I got it? I got it on a trade deal, the guitar had the pups in it that are in the pic.

let me know what you think, maybe this weekend I can get my wife to get some close up pics of it for you.

if you do want it, we shall talk.

That would be fantastic! Thanks for even considering. If it is my old baby, it would mean a great deal, sentimentally, to get it back. ...of course only in a way that was fair and agreeable to you as well if you were willing. I've forwarded this thread on to two of my highschool friends who also knew the pickup in question for their input on it. Perhaps they recognize the Junior or something else about it and can confirm.

Man, down here we've always known Marylanders as hard core rockers.

Joan Jett? Can you hook me up?

If no Joan Jett, then how about you and your pals each pitching in a Les Paul in trade to bring this truly iconic, collectable, classic, historical and vintage pup back home to Maryland?

Deal?

Let me know.

Jimmy

C.S.I. Dimarzio! This is a cool story developing. On a side note James, I took the 70's Super Distortion that I had on ebay down because I couldn't bring myself to part with it for chump change... I've had that pickup for almost a long as I've been playing guitar! (early 90's)
