Re: Pickup Cover's ? Naked Pup's ? ...
Depends heavily on the guitar they are going into.
Les Paul Customs need gold plated covers. I tried every uncovered combo you can think of in my Blonde Custom, double black, zebra, double creme, the only ones that were acceptable *to look at, they all sounded great* were the double blacks. Had to go back to the gold! In an Ebony Standard, double blacks look hot, and so do zebra, or plain nickel silver covers. It also depends on the rings you're using. I switched my creme rings for black, and I'm switching the hardware to black chrome, with black reflector knobs and switch ring, but orange tip on the switch. My other black Les Paul has zebra uncovered pups. Looks great too, but again, black rings and knobs. The double creme pickups only work *for me* in creme rings. Zebra works in both types of rings. On burst finishes I prefer nickel covers, but there are some on the site here that have zebra or double white, black what-have-you that look smokin'... I just prefer the covered pickup look on those. Unless its tobacco burst, in which case I dig the zebra for sure... |

I ran without covers for quite awhile
![]() finally broke down and put covers back on. It just looks correct to me with covers (RS aged).

I love the look of double whites but I prefer to have nickel covers on for tone as well as protection.

Re: Pickup Cover's ? Naked Pup's ? ...
Man, I don't know how to respond here. I just flat out LOVE covers. Prefer nickel since I'm usually just not into gold hardware. That said my 1960 Classic is sporting dbl cream pups and looks awesome, and my Cherry Explorer is spoting black/white zebras. I think it really depends on the axe and the harware that's on it. I really wish I could get my hands on DiMarzio's with black chrome covers since I want to go to black hardware on the Les Paul Studio Vintage Mahogany I just picked up in Cherry. Actually, I think I'm just gonna go play for a while...

Re: Pickup Cover's ? Naked Pup's ? ...
Perhaps covers keep the pick ups cleaner over time?
Otherwise, just a matter of cosmetic preference, ISTM. On any given guitar I might like any of the choices on a given day....

Re: Pickup Cover's ? Naked Pup's ? ...
I like double whites, blacks and zebras, but I also like to leave the neck pup covered on cherrybursts (nickel covers).
