PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
I have a Goldtop Chambered Reissue guitar and I'm looking to swap the pickups.
My guitar has the burstbuckers, but sounds like a cross between a les paul and a ES-335. I want to increase the mids, but keep the classic Jimmy Page tone. I want to stay in the vintage tone arena as well. What pickups would you suggest? Many Thanks! |

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
i like the seymour duncan JB in the bridge position. it' known for it's mids and ability to cut through the mix. great for playing live. it also has a very vintage feel to it. a good example of how it sounds is the tone Page uses here
i have it strictly in the bridge position though, that's where i need the most cut and crunch when playing lead. in the bridge a have a dimarzio 36th anniversary PAF for a mellower PAF style tone. |

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
That vid is from 1970. Page had his original PAF in that guitar which has nothing in common with a JB. The tone from that video is shear volume through Marshall plexi's with maybe a tonebender or a treble booster.

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
It's been a slow process getting them up on my site. I also have several other sets that need to be put on the site. I'm waiting to get all of the video clips done and I will post them.
My Royal Tribute set is a little on the warm side and I don't know if that would fit your guitar. You sais it sounds like a cross between a Les Paul and a 335, as it is chambered. If it were my guitar I would go with a lower output set to compliment the guitar. Just my 2 cents

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
I trust my ears rather then names. i played my les paul with the JB through a couple early 70s Marshalls and a 1974x reissue, to me the sound was very similar. That's what i base my opinions on, not the basis that if a pickup is a PAF clone it must sound like Jimmy Page.

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
I'm a big fan of low wind pickups with Alnico 2 magnets in those type of guitars. Just my opinion

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
If you can find a used Tom Holmes set, they fit your description very nicely imo. They are some of the best pickups I've heard. They do have a noticeable midrange presence, but are very clerar and articulate too.
I may have a used set for sell sometime in the future. I bought them from 2 different sellers. The neck was new and the bridge fairly heavily used, but there are no issues with it whatsoever. I have a new set on order. Tom is winding again, but I have no idea how far down the line I am. I suspect I will receive them sometime this year though.

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
BTW. I have my set in a chambered PRS SC 245 and they sound great in that guitar.

i have a CR8 and it sounded just as you described with the stock burst buckers. I also wanted to increase the mids and stay "vintage" I went with a set of skatterbranes, but i had them kicking around so it was an easy decision. PM a few of the winders here and they'll get you set up. if you're on a budget, try J S Moore pickups. they're fantastic and very well priced. I felt the set i had was every bit as good as my skatterbranes for a little less money.

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
I had the V59s with unoriented alnico V's if I am not mistaken.
my next set will more than likely be another pair of the same.

Bareknuckle Riff Raff (Bridge), The Mule (Neck), or Calibrated "The Mule" set.

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
Anyone like the Fralin Pure PAF's?
I was listening to a Jeff Beck bootleg with him at the Grande Ballroom in 68, I think that sound he is getting is total PAF nirvana. Nice hollow tone with unbelievable articulation. When Beck has both pickups on, it sounds almost like a strat. How can I get the tone with my CR7? |

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
+1 for Lindy's Pure PAF! Those things are clear, articulate, balanced, really really musical sounding, totally exhibit every nuance of the player's touch on the neck. Great pickups..

Re: PAF Pickup suggestion for CR7
That hollow tone has much more to do with your guitar and amp, also your playing technique. You do need the right pickups also, but if your guitar, style, and amp aren't gonna give it up than the pickups won't either.
