Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
I'm extremely interested but... I agree that computer speakers won't really differentiate them enough and I just haven't had time to burn them to a cd and listen on a stereo yet. No big deal. Once the results are published it really won't influence me. I own many the pickups tested so have my own opinions and usually root for the underdog anyway. I would love to have a set of 57 classics win although their not in the contest.

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Ok everybody , It’s now time to move this thread a long . I’d like to thank every member who voted and or Posted their choices so far. We all felt (the Winders and Myself) it was the only true way to know what pickups all of you really liked, with –out the Name being attached to them . I will tally the votes over the next day or so and then post the results.
So now, we move on to the next part of the thread. Having the backing and support of the Winders who contributed their pickups, thoughts and suggestions to me. We All , wanted to give the members an opportunity to WIN PICKUPS , by having a contest. So here it is . THE (PUT THE NAME ON THE VIDEO) CONTEST. What I am asking is for anyone interested . Please make a list of all 17 video’s of who you think the pickups are in each video . Starting with the #1 video and going to the #2 video and than the #3 video and continue down until you reach #17 (as I listed them on the post HERE and not on Photobucket’s list, so there is no confusion) . The person or persons who have the MOST correct answers will win the First place spot. The Next person or persons with the next amount of correct answers the will win the Second place spot . The next person or person with the next amount of correct answers will win the Third place spot. The Prizes are as follows : From ReWind Electric, “ one set of my pickups with any options, Continental US shipping included. International shipping will be the responsibility of the winner”. From Skatterbrane, One set of Twangbranes , Continental US shipping included. International shipping will be the responsibility of the winner . From Electric City Pickups, “A set of Fatty Arbuckers with choice of bare nickel, buffed bare nickel, or nickel plated covers. US shipping included overseas extra”. The first place Winner gets to pick any 1 set of pickups from the list above. The Second place winner gets to pick 1 set of pickups from the pickups that remain . The Third place winner gets the last set of pickups that remain . Here are the complete list of Pickups and Their Winders for you to reference from. These are all the Pickups used in the making of the Shoot-Out. The list is in random order and not the order of the videos. ThroBak (SLE-101 MXV LTD ). Sheptones , (Tributes). ReWind Electric (Creme Brulee’ & Zebras (Medium -Output). Early PAT. # (Gibson). Skatterbranes, (Twangbranes, Woodbranes, Burstbranes). Zhangbuckers, (Pagey2 n , Slugbucker b , Both Pure Handwound). Electric City Pickups, (RD-59’s, Fatty Arbuckers). OTPG. Fuelie (Plane Jane). Stephens Designs (VL2’s). Sheds, (PAF Daddy’s & Blues & Two’s) . Shaw’s, (#'s 137 & 138). It is not required to list all 17 , but I would suggest you do, Even if you take a guess. The post will be closed for this part of the Thread Next Saturday 3/31/2012 (no more entries after that date , as of 4pm EST. ) I am the sole judge for the deciding of all winners. In the event of a tie , The post with the earliest time of entry will be the Winner. I will announce all the Winners and the complete list of correct answers for everyone to see, shortly after the Contest concludes . Now, This is the difficult part ……. I told many it would be Interesting . This should be Fun. Good luck to Everybody . Last edited by jamman; 03-24-2012 at 09:26 PM. |

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Jamman, Skat, Bill & James, many thanks for making this happen.
This is truly great, even though Lady Luck (in my opinion) will ultimately decide the winner. I mean, how is it possible to know when all the sets sounded so damn close...? ![]() I hate you for the fact that I will have one more week to wait for finding out the who-is-who, but what the hell... ![]()

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Right, I missed the poll whilst listening to them all, but I've written 4 pages of notes and will break the pickups into 3 categories: Not my sort of thing; Nice but not my take on a great PAF sound; and Sounds like the sort of pickup I get on well with.
It will be interesting to see if my perceived prejudices have any subliminal effect on how I vote, but I'm actually most interested to hear what Jamman has to say about the process. I got the impression he liked sets #6 and #8 best whilst playing the clips - but great playing throughout! Going to the pub, will do some narrowing down once I've had 3 pints of bitter. Liam |

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
For his unselfish and valiant effort, Jamman should be given a V.I.P. membership by MLP. We, the members owe you a debt of gratitude for one of the best, if not the best, open pickup contests ever hosted on the internet. Every winder is a winner, and should also be congratulated for advancing the state of the art to what it is today. Bravo one and all. I hope it means new business since the level of excellence is so high.

My favorites for what I perceive to be PAF sound.
1-17 2-16 3-14 4-8 5-12 I only 2 two passes with headphones I was looking for a very clear tone from all 3 settings and the necessarry mid range. Thank you Jamman! Excellent work !

Ok guys , I just finished writing down all the votes from the posts . I'll now be adding them to the computer poll above and post the totals within the hour .
I want to thank everyone who was involved with this project for doing a great job . The Winders , the Members who posted are a key part of what I believe is a special Thread. All the kind words and thoughts to me will not be forgot. |

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
OK here are ,
The Total votes as I count them. First , I used the Computer poll as the starting place . Then I added the votes that were posted as well as I could ascertain from a few of the posts. Most were very clear and easy to count . Thanks to everyone who took the time and effort to post . It helped to overcome the bad way I made the poll . I took the votes from these posts #’s: 4,5,6,943,53,56,58,60,70,76,77,81,(123,voted in computer),131,146,147,148, (161(I counted the 1st.post),166,170,171,174,181. *#2 –this was a duplicate vote from the member who used the computer . I did not count the posted votes. Here is the new tally of the total votes cast : Video # , New # of votes 1 = 12 2 = 9 3 = 7 4 = 11 5 = 8 6 = 8 7 = 8 8 = 21 9 = 13 10 = 9 11 = 9 12 = 8 13 = 11 14 = 7 15 = 11 16 = 15 17 = 10 Congrats to the Winner . |

#8 is actually a Burstbucker that Jamman threw in for laughs.

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Please see post #184 . If you have anyother questions just ask.
![]() I could of done that , but I didn't . maybe for the next shoot-out ?How about a 4 conductor BB and coil tapping it . Now that would make it difficult ![]() ![]() Quote:
As an example :Skatterbranes, (Twangbranes, Woodbranes, Burstbranes) are the names of each pickup that were sent to me and videoed, than placed in the shoot out . |

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Jamman for your vote count, did you count the whole list each poster put up (when multiple choices were posted) or just their number 1 favorite? (if they so expressed one)

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Yes , the format you used is perfect . But , the list is not .
In understanding How very difficult this is to do, I have decided to give a helpful hint. It should narrow the field some and help put together the list for eveyone . When I selected each video placement in the Shoot -Out , I kept each Winder with Multi entry's together . They are grouped together. ![]()

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"
Probably too late to appear in the poll, and I wish I had time to do more comparison. But here goes with my thoughts:
Lovely pickups I'm sure - but not my sort of thing #1. Nice, clear, warm and hollow neck without mud. String balance on bridge a bit uneven. #2. Thick, quite high output. Nice, probably not my sort of thing, neck a bit indistinct. #5. CF #1 #7. Poles look raised compared to others. Seem a bit "generic humbucker". #9. Reminiscent of 1 and 5, maybe 7. OK, but kind of generic sounding again. #12. Don't like those covers. Not my sort of thing, seem middly and a bit cheesy. Neck good and clear, but doesn't light my fire. Probably not my take on a great PAF, but great pickups all the same #6. Like these, as it would appear does Jamman - makes him work at it! Output on the high side, but very clear. Neck sounds a little "distant", but very nice. #8. Another nice sounding medium output set - and again Jamman gets on great with these, especially the neck. #10. Higher output bridge, but with a LOT of character and clarity. Great. Good clear neck. Would like to hear more of this set on the lower strings. #11. Neck poles set low. Another warm and characterful bridge. Maybe lacking some snarl at the bottom end. Good clear neck, but weak high string output - maybe just needs to be closer to the strings. #13. Another strong sounding set that I could like. Some of that bloom isn't the video camera. Nice neck. I could enjoy these in a blues environment. #14. Really nice thick bridge tone - which possibly wouldn't be for me - but another characterful one. Not quite so sure about the neck, a little bit of mud in it. Which leaves me with 5 favourites. I'll have a go at putting them in order of preference at some point, but it's a tough choice. It will be interesting to see if pickups I like in real life appear in my top 5. My idea of great PAF tone... #3. Really like the bridge. Got the "talking vowel" thing going. Neck is really clear. My take on a great PAF tone. #4. Nice covers! Hard to separate bridge from #3, less vowel and a little thicker sounding. Nice clear neck. Not sure I like the "both" position as much as with #3. #15. Nice glassy PAF tone like I enjoy. Another set that would suit me - neck possibly a bit too thin, but might just be amp settings. #16. On the middly side for me, but definitely have a load of character. Nice plummy medium output neck. Really like these. #17. Like 16 in so many ways, but neck is almost Strat-like. Another very fine set of pickups. Thanks again Jamman - you really do deserve VIP status for this! Liam |
