Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"

Ok. First I would like to start off saying that this was very difficult and I had to do a lot of close listening. I downloaded all the clips and first listened through my studio headphones and got my first impressions. Second, I burnt a dvd and listened on my HK home theater system. Third, I loaded all clips into my video software and separated all the bridge pickups, the neck pickups, and the in between positions. So, I then listened to all the bridges together, then the necks, and finally the mid positions. I did this over the last few days in small increments as not to get fatigued. Now I have come to my final top 5 picks which were chosen not only on individual pickup sounds, but on total sound ( would I like this SET in my guitar) and here are my choices from first to last.

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"

Should I vote on my favorites or post my written notes?

I'm finding it hard to vote as I think the different sets would have their strengths in different situations.

I voted, but also let everyone know how I came to my conclusion. I voted by pickup sets, not by individual pickups. I would be proud to own any of the sets in this shootout

If I were you I would vote and post your written notes, but I would also list your favorites in order. I think jamman needs definitive votes to be able to tally up this poll. My 2c

1. Vid #9
2. #16

However, a comment on the recording. Notice how the backing track fades down as the guitar starts playing, and then comes back up when it stops? That's the video camera's automatic level control taking the recording level down as the sound pressure level in the room goes up. Effectively reducing the dynamic range to make the recording clearer. Which is good for things to sound nice, but bad in that all the pickups sound like they've got a bit more attack and a bit more bloom than they have in real life.

I can guess just how much work you put into this, so I really don't want to seem like I'm putting it down. All the pickups definitely get a fair run for their money, and an unbiased shot at people finding out what they are like.

Thanks for doing this - I'll do my best to get them all listened to.

Liam
Thanks for the very kind words, Liam . Lt. Kojak also asked about this problem . I checked the camera and there was no way to turn that function off. I agree , it would have been much better without it . Everyone's input is wanted and needed . And yes , the amount of work that went into this was even more than I had invisioned .

Re: My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"

Mate,it was/is very very hard and also a little disconcerting, considering as I have a set of Shep's Tributes on their way to me.

What if I didn't even pick them

I'm going back to the studio and crank it again through the speakers down there.
I've listened so far,to them through my studio system, computer speakers and headphones...I'm quite aware that what's been pressed and what these are like in the flesh are 2 completely different things...but I think they ALL truly hold up well.

There is NO BAD/WORST. They are ALL GOOD.

But alas...there can be only 1

* #9 was the Shep's,right. Huh?

You got nervous for that? Imagine how the winders in here feel that it's quite possible that they don't get to pick their own pickups...!

(just messing with you boys! Truly, there is no such a thing as a bad pair of pickups in this company. )

Agree, as I have said many times before, there is a big difference in Vintage PAF tones vs. Modern PAF tones................& many in between.

What one person likes another will not & so on.

My 2c FWIW.

I voted honestly as I picked the best sounding vids, to me, with no regard to possibly picking my own. I could care less about where my pickups rank as I've even stated this to jamman long before the shootout. I care more about how my pickups compare tonally to the others, and from the sound of all of the vids, all of the pickups in this shootout compare very well to each other. Everyone should be proud.

I vote for Jamman.

Then, those which "talk" to me at the first notes are the...

(Chronological order)

EDIT: I had mentioned three numbers but finally, I don't want to bias the poll by claiming my choice. Hence the nice little *** above.

I prefer the mentioned PU's... on this amp, through this cable, on this guitar with these pots and strings, played with this pick by this player. My humble choice could be different if one of these parms changed.

Thx - thx - thx to have posted that, Jamman!!!
