Excuse me my English.
I recently purchased of used EMG-89 and installed it on my guitar. It works great as a humbucker, but in single mode, the volume simply drops twice and the sound does not become a typical single sound that I can hear on the samples for this pickup. At first I thought that this is a problem with my copy or is it a problem in the installation but realized that such a problem for many people - there are many sources where people complain about the same problems. Usually they get the answer that it is natural that in the single mode the sound becomes quieter, and as a result they think that this is normal and just do not use this mode. But it is not so. At a forum which I usually use (the Russian forum) I found a lot of the owners of EMG-89 and we were able to compare the records of our pickups and understand that only a half works as it should. I'm sure so many people around the world could not make a same mistake during the installation and getting the same result. What's the problem? Most of the pickups that work as should newer than mine (10/01/07). Maybe in a different time of production of these pickups they were made differently? I tried to post this message on the EMG forum but its just not allowed! |

Re: EMG-89 Global problem?
Sounds like it might be wired wrong. I am a big EMG fan and endorser. I use the 89R in the neck pickup of my 3 main guitars. I have not had any problems at all. A slight volume drop off is normal when cutting out one of the coils. Check out the link below, it has lots of EMG 89 wiring diagrams.
