Re: Gibson Pickup Database
Velvet Brick Pickups
These came stock in the Sonex 180 and the Gibson "The SG" made between the years of 1979 - 1983. Often overlooked and forgotten it is now hard to find info on these pickups because everyone confuses them with the Dirty Fingers. They are similar Zebra black and Cream open coil humbuckers with screw pole pieces onthe balck side and flat pole pieces on the Cram - but the clearest difference is that they have 3 adjustable mounting screws - two on one side and one on the other. they are also made in Germany - not the USA. I read an article once with Willem Lorenz aka Bill Lawrence that said while he was working for Gibson he had these custom sound to his specs by Schaller in West Germany. They are very Hot pickups but still very toneful. I don't know the exact output but must be at least 13K. Sort of the polar opposite of a PAF - if you like the Dirty Fingers you will love these. they are excellent pickups |

Re: Gibson Pickup Database
An interesting fact that a lot of people do not know, Gibson announced their new humbucking pickup code named PU-490 in the summer 1957, now known as PAF's.
So when Gibson introduced there new Modern Classic Humbuckers in 1990 they used the 490 name again. |

Re: Gibson Pickup Database
Super Humbucker type C. Output is roughly 1.5X an original Gibson Humbucker. By comparison, a DiMarzio Super II is about 2X an original Gibson Humbucker.
There are no adjustable polepieces (which is part of the reason you don't see screws poking through the cover). Each pickup uses 3 Indox 7 magnets -- these are a type of ceramic magnet, but they're smaller than normal and used in a way to get more power out of a smaller magnet (greater efficiency, yada yada). So it's not a typical ceramic magnet pickup at all. The bottom (under) plate is brass. The cover (except for the black ones and maybe *including* the black ones) was nickel silver. They were potted in epoxy rather than wax. |

Re: Gibson Pickup Database
Bill Lawrence joined thev Gibson company in 1971 he was originally asked to design a "multi sound" system for the SG, but wanted to build a completely different guitar instead, and that ended up being the L6S though that guitar as it was produced was quite different from the guitar Lawrence designed. The Super Humbucker was designed for the L6S by Bill Lawrence

Re: Gibson Pickup Database
New guy with a meter.Pulled a set of pups out of an '05 STD DC a few weeks ago I "believe" are 57 Classic and Classic Plus.Glad I logged on and saw this thread. I was looking to shoot the numbers as I just thought they were the 490R/498T set typically OE from Gibson until I pulled them to ready the axe for a new set from Wagner.Pulled the bridge and was greeted with a "Patented Applied For" decal - same for the neck.Still gets my chino's churn'n when the little sticker pops up unexpectedly.Wax potted. As per my limited experence with the 490/498 set - neck not bad, fair content, okydoky dynamics.I like it.Bridge - great for someone else's axe.Middle - goodish.
Just shot the numbers - Bridge 9.8 Neck 7.8 Hope that helps. To my knowledge,Gibson only puts the PAF stickers on the 57's and BurstBuckers but these are potted, believe the BB are not.I attempt to play more than memorize specs so all insight is well recieved here. I like it here, thanks for having me. Destry |

Re: Gibson Pickup Database
done. That places the 490R nearer to the classic, then i exspected before
done. Hope, you hold the temperatur ![]() Quote:
The 490R (classic-like baseplate, no decall) in my 92' Studio is potted. The one in my 98 'DC not. Maybe they did to some 57' also? Its also unusual for the GIBSON USA section to build one-piece-backs, but the did and do.. Did the Classics hit the market at the same time as the 490R/490T/496R/498T/500T did ? |

Re: Gibson Pickup Database
That's what you get when copy/pasting a roughdraft of current production Gibson/Epiphone pickup DC-resistance chart I made up a few years ago.
The addition of vintage PAF/Shaws, and the ommision of the Epiphones don't mask the mistakes. Nice try tho.
