Timbuckers and Patent No incoming

If things work out I'll own a set of Timbuckers (creme) by next week.

I read about Tims pu’s several years ago, made me want a set so I mailed him. At that point, however, he had stopped winding, so I’m really looking forward to this set.

I'm also waiting for a paf'ish 8k Patent No (pre T-top) pu. I'm thinking of doing some comparative recordings (T-top, Timbucker, Patent No and ev. Burstbucker Pro and my stock Burstbucker).

What do you think, would such a test be helpful?

I will be more than interested in the comparison between pre-T-Top and T-Top!

Thanks for replying, I'll start of with the test you suggested (it might take a few days though). The Patent No arrived today, here's some pics:

It reads 8.3k

DC DOES NOT EQUAL OUTPUT. Dc is a resistance value and that is all. It WILL NOT tell you what it will sound like, it WILL NOT make you sound like another player.

Forget the test man, I want to hear more of your playing. It's smooth and very relaxing, haha, just kidding. The comp tests are always excellent to hear. Do you have any Shaws to throw into the mix? So which is the Pre Ttop? the neck or bridge?

btw, perfect playing for the comparison. It allows you to hear the tones. Nice job recording.

Thanks BuzzHaze,

I really wish I had some Shaws to compare with....

The Pre T-top is the last pu,

I think both pu's have a great vintage vibe...

Awesome. . . I'd love to hear you add a Tim clip to your comparison video.

BTW, what "vintage" are your Tim's?

I have an earlier set of Tims and I understand they have more cut/bite. His later winds were said to be sweeter.

Ok, thanks. Makes me wonder if there are certain ways to date Tims?

I'm not sure, but I could probably do some digging. I know a forum where there's lots of info. FWIW, mine look very similar to yours.

Re: Timbuckers and Patent No incoming

Thanks for the clip!

I did a little Timbucker history digging. I was unable to find anything that would help identify the vintage of a Timbucker, other than the sense that later pickups were numbered and earlier ones were not.

In terms on tonality, the older versions are said to be brighter / thinner, while the newer ones were sweeter / fatter (but still clear). Some preferred the old and some the new. It likely depends on the guitar you're putting them into. I also learned there were pre EdA versions, an EdA version up to 2006 and an EdA version 2 beginning in either late 2006 or early 2007. EdA version 2 sounds like the sweeter / fatter version.

I think I have the "EdA version up to 2006". I put the neck PUP into a heavy 1980 Les Paul and into a slab mahogany Collings. These are very different guitars, one cutting and bright; the other very warm and thick. My Tim bridge sounded very nice in the warm Collings, which of course makes sense. The bright / thin pickup offsets the strong lower mids of the Collings. I'm going to put the complete set into the Collings and I suspect that guitar will come alive with them.

I hope you find some of this helpful.

Terry.

Thanks Terry for history digging. I've now found out (the previous owner mailed me) that my pu's are from 2004. I will try them in different guitars later on ....

Re: Timbuckers and Patent No incoming

I recall that tim changed his wire and that's how the 2nd version came out. i have #24 and another he matched a few years later. They are 4-conductor. There was also briefly the EdW wind if i remember correctly. I will probably be putting mine up on ebay if anyone is interested.

Jaysr, what's your email? I have questions about your timbuckers. Or if anyone else could answer about whether they were all made in the 4-conductor configuration? Thanks in advance.

SWEET PLAYING! And a very useful test. Both pups sound great, but it seems Pickup B is rounder and has more "juice."

It seems like the difference between the 2 pickups is less noticeable with a distorted amp, even though the distortion is moderate.

My experience is that distortion tend to go hard on (rectify) tonal capacity"...

Nice tones and playing!

I have a pre t-top (neck) and a t-top in my '55 conversion......always loved those things.
