It seems like they are becoming the forums most recommended PAF type pickup, I have had mine 2 years and still love them, definitely the best value for tone!

The 36th is a nice pup. They cover a lot of ground.

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

Yep, took it to band rehearsal straight away, did Foo Fighters REALLY good, covered System of a Down and Paramore. Everything lower gain is easy, too.

The neck pickup is great, is acoustic qualities. Bridge roars.
In fact, the distorted tone comes close to what the Scorpions did in the 80s.
Love it.

Oh, and captcoolaid, I just wanted to say that I like it that you wind pickups and still respect other manufacturers - some winders don't seem to have that ability.

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

What?! You thew out a boutique pair of pickups for Dimarzios?!

Ive been hearing how good these are but I didn't realise that people like them that much, especially with them not being vintage output or handwound and other things like that.

Btw, the double creams go really well with that guitar, but I love the finish/ reflectors more than the pickups. Are the reflectors stock Gibson ones?

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

HI- New guy here...I just want to comment on Epi's and DiMarzios....I have a honeyburst Epi LP and I put a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the neck and a DiMarzio Super 3 in the bridge and 'wow', can you say powerful?....but being of my age, I decided to tone it down a bit, so I replaced the Dimmy's with Duncan Alnico II n/b and sprague PIO caps and OMG------night and day. APH1's are awesome p'ups IMO.

Yep. After all, tone is always subjective. Some people want that unfiltered PAF tone. Well, you probably have to find your choice in between all the handwounds then.

I can't use that tone tbh. I tend to like what I listen to, and the DiMarzio does just that, it delivers the tone you can hear on so many records. It's still very open and airy, don't think it sounds "2D" or "boxy". The output IS Vintage. The bridge has some horsepower more, that's true, but it is still in the Vintage range.
The whole set has that "DiMarzio mid thingy" going on, that's why I like them, too.

The reflectors are mighty mite reflectors. It's not a Gibson guitar (Bulldog kit) anyways. I'm going back and forth between reflectors and non-reflectors almost weekly, but I think it looks sharp as is right now.

Plenty of tight bottom end for that. Does work. As I said, we were doing some System of a down the other day. Although it's still a PAF, you have to keep that in mind. But one of the more versatile ones.
Neck does fluid lead lines really well, too.

I have a set of 36th's with the vintage bobbins, nice sounding pickups. Good bang for the buck, and they hang with some of the boutique pickups I've had.

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

I've replaced the 36ths in my Les Paul with two sets of different boo-teeqy pups -- only to put the 36ths back in. Mind you, I play straight-into-a-Twin clean, so I can't speak for OD tones, but in my case the aged/covered set of 36ths does the trick for me.

One thing that I have noticed is that they are very sensitive to height adjustment. Can get to harsh rather quickly.

You have to work to find the "sweet spot".

Got the same feeling with a pair of Duncan SH55's.

I don't think it depends (only) on the pickups used.

AFAIK, Scorpion used mostly T-Top loaded guitars, anyway, and nor the DM nor the Duncan are supposed to be T-Top replicas (it's my double reason to think and say that Scorpion's tone don't come from the kind of PU's used).

They even used P90s on the newest album.

Scorpions tone is a cranked Marshall and a Tubescreamer. Archievable with pretty much any Pickup.

Howdy,

Glad you like the 36th Anni PAF, Capt. Gonzo! I'm pleased with the 36th I've got in the bridge of my ES-335.

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

Yeah, well actually I'm selling them again... Guitarists and gear-whores like me are a crazy bunch, I know.

They are good pickups, certainly better than the ones I had before in some areas, certainly lacking in some areas where the Boutique ones shined.

At the end of the day, Alnico V is to aggressive for me, at least in a PAF. But they do have qualities. And are MILES ahead of the SH1...MILES, I tell ya.

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

The best sound I could get was the old thumb rule - fret both "e"s at the highest fret, measure height from pickup to string. should be 2-3mm.

Try to fiddle around in between that space.

Scorpos haven't used Marshalls in nearly 20 years. Rudy has been using ENGL and Diezel stuff for about 15 years and Matthias used a Fender Prosonic combo (converted to a head) for most of the 90's and then switched to his own company of amps (Mastertones) about 5 years ago.

Re: NPUD: DiMarzio Content! (Double cream!)

We were talking about classic Scorpions tone. And that is Humbucker -> TS -> gained out Marshall.

I know my stuff about the Scorpions, trust me, have visited MJs store personally, too, and played the mastertones aswell as the Mastercaster.
