Super distortion..cover?

Hey fellow jammers! I want to replace the bridge Pickup in my Epi LP Custom Silverburst. I want to go with a DiMarzio Super Distortion, as it is my favourite. (dropped it in the bridge of an Epi dot and it ROCKS!)
The thing is, I love the way the Silverbusrt looks with the chrome covers on the pickups and I know those Dimarzios are open coil. I realize I could get the Chrome open coil version, but that's $50 more just for the color.
My question is, has anyone placed a SD in a Gibson chrome cover, then installed?
Would that mess things up?
I know I could just go with Burstbuckers or PAF's, but I love the SD sound so much!

Re: Super distortion..cover?

The first problem you would have would be to find a cover with two rows of six holes across to accomadate the hex polepieces (12-hole covers are hard to find). You could drill another row, but it would really be a pain to get everything aligned as well as have the right drill press and bits to drill clean holes.

Then you would have to do something to the cover in order to supress vibrations that cause microphonic feedback (wax pot or apply silicon inside the cover, tape, or felt strips...etc.)

You can buy covers that are solid with no holes..however, it will affect the tone to some degree because of the hex poles being covered.

if you must have a high output pickup with a ceramic mag, you might try either Seymour Duncan Duncan Custom or the Duncan Distortion. I have both and they rock. You can buy them with covers for not that much more.

Re: Super distortion..cover?

oh..also...the Super Distortion is a pickup that is little harder to find a cover for. However, if the pickup was the standard fillister/slug combo, you wouldn't have a problem at all getting a cover.

You also may want to contact DiMarzio to see if they have covers for the SD and if they would sell you one. I also forgot to mention that you would also have to raise the hex pole pieces a bit to adjust for the space between the bobbin and cover in order to get a good string response from the pickup.

Re: Super distortion..cover?

I think I may just put the SD's in and see how it looks, because I know it's gonna sound great. I've been looking for pics of a Silverburst with open coils just to see..anyone got any?

Re: Super distortion..cover?

I ended up going with the DiMarzio SD at the bridge and an Air Norton at the neck...both sound great alone, and the blend is fantastic!
