NPD! Custom built Plexi Drive

A little something I cooked up for fellow forum member SludgeBurns since he got gyped on a GGG board a while back. He paid for a board that had no hopes of ever working so I decided to help him out with something that will.

A cross between a Klon and a Hermida ZenDrive (the gain section has more range so you can go from a hint of a clear boost to full on drive if needed). I painted it House of Kolor Lemon Yellow with Lime Gold Kandy to top it off. I've got about a pint of both just sitting here from my bike so I figured I would put it to good use.

I wanted to post this here to one, make Sludge even more anxious to get his hands on it and two, to spur more folks here to dig into the DIY type stuff and jump on their own builds.

Initial box...

Yellow urethane primer applied then wet sanded...

After...

labeled and graphics applied for fun...

Finished product...minus the knobs...

A nice 5mm UV LED lets you know when it's on...looks kinda dull in the picture but it's actually quite bright.
SludgeBurns likes this.

Unfortunately no. I don't have any at home recording stuff anymore. Amazing how when you have it, you don't need it but once you get rid of it, you need it.

Ah well, that's too bad. Does you computer have a built-in microphone? :P

The thing that really gets me is the colour. Yellow is my favourite, I'd love to have something that looks like that.

No, don't have that either. Sorry. Nothing short of a cell phone/camera type recording on Youtube that always suck the life out of the tone. Maybe SludgeBurns has some type of recording capability.

The images don't really do the color much justice IMO. I've got a great camera but it still can't really get the Kandy pearl that well . It's really pops out in the sunlight.

I've also got House of Kolor Apple Red and a HOK white and black (forgot the exact names) sitting out in the garage from previous cars I've shot. I've even got some Kameleon but thats pretty high dollar stuff to be stepping on. A pint of it generally runs north of $300. I could put a gallon of clear on a pedal and still not want to use it. I had a hard enough time driving my car with that paint on there.

If you really want one, I'm willing to build it with a 7 day type policy. If you don't like it, return it for a full refund. PM me if you would like one.

Excellent work there, mister Dog !

If you implement bits of the Klon Centaur to the Tube Screamer-ish circuit of the Zendrive, then how close is your design to the Maxon OD-820 ?

Thats actually a good question...and I don't have an answer to it. I've never owned or even played though an 820 but from what I just pulled off Google, this has a lower component count. I couldn't find a schematic though. The 820 does sound like a pretty cool pedal though.

This looks nice, good work

Hmmm... what kind of knob would look good? The small MXR type? Perhaps something metallic? hmmm...

I left that up to him. I would have gone with the cream white ones that PPP sells.

Re: NPD! Custom built Plexi Drive

I don't know how I missed this thread until now but I just got the pedal in the mail today! I was only able to play with it for about ten minutes before I had to go to work though. It sounds killer so far though. EXTREMELY versatile.

I put some brown pointer knobs on it and I think it looks great with the yellow. Here are some cell phone photos. I'll take some better ones soon.

I'm working on getting together a system to record into my computer but at the moment I have no way to do it so I'll pop in sometime with samples.

Again Josh, I can't say thank you enough. You really went above and beyond what this started out as.

Here's the link if anyone is interested:

Any pedal builders or experts want to help me with a Tubescreamer clone?

Somehow that turned into the pedal we have in this thread being mine?

Thanks again!

I must say I feel much better knowing that the original board in my build was defective. It does give me some motivation to try again sometime because honestly I was really bummed when my hard work didn't pay off and I thought I must have screwed something up.

No, it wasn't you. the board ground terminated at a 9v point. the traces were real close but when I pulled out the DMM, I kept getting voltage at every point on the board and I was scratching my head until I traced it all out compared to how it should have been.

Pro Guitar Shop, man (don't worry, a man that can build such a cool pedal is far from a moron...). They have great stock and great youtube videos.

I like Pedal Gas Syndrome the best...

It most accurately describes me. I never use more than 3 at a time but I've got about 40 just hangin around here.

I'm actually going to make two...a black one and another yellow one. Have two enclosures...figured I would put them to good use.
