Question Need Advice On OD/DS Pedal?

Alright, So I'm using a Mesa Boogie Road King halfstack, I already have my presets dialed in to how I want them but I need something.. The only way I can describe it is "I want something that will tighten up my distortion" or "enhance" it. NOT and I repeat NOT a volume boost.

I'm sorta leaning towards a MXR pedal but getting like 2-3 of them so I can set them up differently and basically "pre-set" them. (Over all goal is to eliminate Boss ME50 from my pedalboard, for a more complex and more precise effects loop)

So I will stick to distortion/overdrive/gain on this thread. I need something that will basically take my "rhythm" distortion and change it to something more suited for the "riff" of the song.

Maybe a EQ pedal is what I need? I'm sorta lost when it comes to EQ pedals, Seeing that the ONLY pedalboard I've used is my ME50.. Not that it's bad but it has VERY limited control over it's effects.

So, Any ideas?

Edit-

Or maybe, Should I request a custom built pedal from one of MLP's members? That'd be kinda cool.. Like a prototype.

BTW- I've looked at Seymour Duncan, EHX, MXR. They are my three preferred companies. I'm not too crazy about Boss, I think they aren't "amazing" quality. EHX didn't seem like they had anything that would do what I need it to do, Plus they are VERY pricy. I've tried a SD Twin Tube Classic. I returned it the same day because it didn't sound good with my ME50 *duh* I haven't owned any MXR stuff.. Except two Wah-Wah's..

Re: Need Advice On OD/DS Pedal?

I know what you mean about getting away from the ME50. I went from pedals to a gt-6 to simplify things a few years ago. Now I'm re-buying/building pedals to get away from the gt-6. I picked up a Fulltone OCD v.4 and really like the distortion/overdrive it puts out. Very tight with nice harmonics.

Nice pedal, I looked at it on ProGuitarShop.com

I'm not sure if it has enough gain/distortion in it though.. But I'll definitely keep that one in the back of my mind.

I've been looking at MXR's new Fullbore Metal pedal.. It has over the top DS/OD but with a 3 band EQ and etc, I was wondering if I may be able to "turn it down" so that it only tightens up a little bit without totally "METAL-ING" my tone?

Again, Not a bad pedal, I'm a little more drawn to the dirty bomb by Barber Electronics. But I'm gonna go try out some pedals today so, I will update you guys later!

Re: Need Advice On OD/DS Pedal?

I'm not sure what type of music your playing but from the setup I'd guess hard rock, maybe a little metal type. If so, have a look at the Hardwire TL-2. I bought this one a few days ago and I think it is killer. Huge wall of sound! I found this video comparing the TL-2 to the Dirty Bomb since you mentioned that one and one other... Good luck ....

Thanks, But no thanks. I went to my local GC and I tried out one of those MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrives. PERFECT for what I need.

I wasn't too crazy bout the MXR but I'm glad you like it. They seem to be popular....

Yeah, The Wylde Overdrive ISN'T a "main distortion/overdrive pedal" it is made to be an "enhancement pedal" which was exactly what I'm looking for was a pedal that wouldn't serve AS my distortion but mainly just enhance it.

I wish the Fullbore Metal Pedal would have worked because it has a built-in noise gate but even with the gain turned all the way down it was just TOO much.. I tried the MXR Distortion III, Not bad. I may use it for another enhancement pedal but the Wylde Overdrive is on the top of my list so far.

Edit-

*completely off topic*

I made a "spoof" video today of my "Slash Tone" I was screwing around my my tone today and I whipped this up in a couple minutes. I'll probably perfect it later, But anyway incase anyone is interested...

http://gallery.me.com/benguitar#100057

I know, A bit TOO distorted and close but not "perfect."

(Just goes to show how noisy Boss Pedals are...)

I didn't know that about the Wylde model! I'm glad it is what you were looking for in sound I looked at the Fullbore and it looks like a nice pedal but I really liked the TL-2. It can be a little extreme but it has some nice tweakable EQ settings on it. Kinda in your face but I know it's not for everyone. I like the Brownie that I've got but it's not a metal pedal. My modded DS-1 is killer but its not quite as tweakable as the Hardwire. Have fun with that new pedal! Later...

Who says she has to play guitar for you to get her some pedals?

Re: Need Advice On OD/DS Pedal?

I'd try a compressor or an Overdrive with a good EQ on it. an Eq might work, but it sounds like you need a bit more bit or fizz on top of your tone.

Re: Need Advice On OD/DS Pedal?

if you like your rhythm distortion sound, do what i did and get a mark I Marshall Guv'nor pedal. it doesn't sound incredible on it's own, but as a boost it sounds ace. i use mine to get harmonic feedback as well.

Sounds good, I don't know what I can and can't do though, Some family issues came up and I don't know if I'll be upgrading or even playing much anymore.

I may have to sell it to feed my family, My 4- year old mother doesn't have a job. And hasn't had one in over 20 years.

Don't ever take your gear for granted, You never know when you might lose it..

I really hope I don't have to lose any of it, But I'll just have to take it one breath at a time...
