Guilty Pleasure Pedals

Here is my list of "guilty pleasure" pedals. Pedals which a lot of reasonable folks think are cheesy, or overused, or stuck in some embarrassing era of rock, but which I am having a ton of fun with anyway:

1. Zoom G1J John5 Signature
Lots of really fun preset effects combinations, and one of them (setting "C4") has become a real favorite. I have it hooked up to a little Marshall MG15CDR and it is such a blast!

2. Boss MT-2 Metal Zone
Man, I just love this one to death. Scoop the mids out of it and my DSL-100 becomes a Dual-Rec killer!

3. Boss CE-3 Chorus
I don't care if everyone thinks it has a distinctively 80's sound to it. For my money it is my favorite chorus pedal of all time.

4. Boss XT-2 Xtortion
Obscure distortion pedal unlike any other. I just love the way you can dial in a subtle wah flavor which gives it a truly tasty texture.

Digitech BM-2: Brian May sig pedal that has a lot of cool settings, and it has good tone. Still can sound harsh with the wah though.

That's a good pedal and it's name tells you exactly what it's all about- if you want a death-from-above scooped mids tone, you can't go wrong with a Metal Zone.

Here I disagree with you. I have an old MIJ CE-3 and I think it sounds pretty flat and one dimensional. Granted, this is apples and oranges, but my Analogman chorus sounds better by miles.

Digitech Bad Monkey. I can't find an overdrive I like better so far.

Boss CH-1. Its simple and can be subtle. Nothing fancy, yet I use it the most.

Danelectro French Toast octave fuzz.

Absolutely with you on the Bad Monkey!!! That low dial adjustment is also the icing on the cake. Great sounding pedal. I keep trying to find excuses to spend double-triple the money on a high end OD, but I just can't justify it. It sounds damn good!!!

Re: Guilty Pleasure Pedals

I don't use my Boss PH1 Phaser too often--it does sound dated--but it's fun.

The Boss AW-3 I don't sue a lot either--but it's a ton of fun--especially on bass--if I played bass more often, I would use it a lot more.

It's greta for certain settings though--so it sticks around.

i think my guilty pleasure is either my wah (a boss pw10 at the moment) or possibly my whammy...

True, but I tend to sell x amount of pedals to buy new ones. I should get back to making stompboxes and selling.. decent $ that way.

I had one of these in the mid/late-80s and I find I like the MT-2 MetalZone far more. Just personal preference.

Actually, I was a user until Digitech released the Hardwire Metal Distortion. It beats the hell out of the MT2 by copying what it does best, and gets rid of what it sucks at. Digitech improved heavily on the MT2 for the TL2.

I had one. Totally LOVED it! Black label MIJ piece. The only reason I got rid of it is because I replaced it with the Hardwire Chorus, that could deliver what the CE3 could do and much much more!

In one of Gibson’s classic moments of waste-not-want-not, Les Paul Custom pickguards and pickup rings were used on a few 1957 Goldtops. The result is an elegant and very rare touch on a
classic Les Paul.

I got one of those a couple of weeks back. Talk about guilty pleasures on a low budget. Proper cheesy fuzz octave for $20.55 brand new, and yep, it's a keeper.

I've also got a couple of HM-2s that I still use (evidently David Gilmour likes them too) and this weird old JHS Fuzz that sounds good and lame. They are out there!

To each his own. I'm thinking of selling my MIJ CE-3 just to get some collector bucks for it since it's just been sitting in a box.

My Visual Sound H20 is cool. I consider the Echo porion of the pedal a necessity and the Chorus a luxury.

Re: Guilty Pleasure Pedals

I recently traded a DS-1 (bland) that was stock for a Digitech Grunge. The Grunge is much more fun, it's just crazy distorted fizz with loads of sustain. I don't use it all the time but when I want to "pretend" I can play Metal it's what I go for.

It's a lot like the Danelectro Fabtone Distortion that I used to have, but with a little more range in the distorted tone. It also seems to take a higher bass setting better than the Dano.

Re: Guilty Pleasure Pedals

I have my Electro-Harmonix Soul Preacher Compressor going all the time when I'm live, jamming, or rehearsing with a band. It brings out the nuances I like and makes my guitars seem more articulate, it also pushes my other pedals which makes them sound better to my ears.

My Devi Ever Karaoke Party is fun too! It sounds just like sh*t! It's pretty bad, but when used with my RAT through a tube amp that's on the verge of over driving it just works...

Okay, it's not a vintage analog or high dollar pedal, but I'm having fun with this one at the moment. I get huge sound out of this one!

Boss Metal zone pedal straight into the board......so weird and fake sounding, but strangely satisfying for death metal scooped chugga chuggas.

This pedal is lots of fun at practice volumes. It is completely useless in a band situation.

I've found that the Metal Muff sounds just fine in a band situation. The Uber Metal was a little better than the Metal Zone, and I'm sure the Guyatone Metal Monster (MM-X) will blow them all away... if I ever get a chance to score one!
