Distortion Pedal

Hi all,

I have just got a Vox VT30 amp at an absolute steal which i love. However the only problem is on the heaviest amp setting i just cant get enough distortion. Im not looking for a really heavy sound just want a tiny bit more distortion. I was thinking of a luther drive but not too sure if thats the right pedal to go for. I had also considered the boss metal zone as well but have heard bad things about boss pedals especially the DS-1.

Thanks in advance

Re: Distortion Pedal

Give tube screamer and wylde overdrive a try, if you're looking for overdrive. If you want distortion, I've never heard better dist then Dimebag's pedal (look at my signature). Boss screws sound somehow (will try to explain it later), my guitarist has MD-2. It sound really good when played without other instruments, but gets real muddy in the mix.

Now, that "somehow" part. I've always had the feeling that the Dime distortion sounds like clean. Not really like that, just had some feeling it's clean, and not distorted sound. The reason for this is that I've played Digitech ... can't even remember which pedal. It's muddy like hell in the mix (more then MD-2, of course). Only later I've realized my DD is not clean, I just can hear every god damn note I play. If you're not expirienced guitarist, I suggest you try playing the pedal with some prerecorded tune (never mind if it's some comercial band, or yours), and see how the sound cuts through. Try not to amplify the sound of your guitar more then the sound of the recording. That's what I would do if I would be in quest for a new pedal. Hope this helps.

If you know your way around PC, and have the time, try to record the sound of the pedal alone (straight to line-in of you audio card) clean and with the pedal engaged. Dist wave should at least look like the clean one. I mean, if you have the wave that is totaly screwed, that's bad sound. It's, of course, just a visual "confirmation" your pedal is good/bad. If you have access to some of the pedals (you can use Guitar Rig or Revalver, dial them the way you like, then the way you don't like), record them and take a look at the wave shape. You'll know what I mean.

Re: Distortion Pedal

Thanks for the suggestion i will definately check out the dime distortion, i had already looked at the wylde overdrive and it does have a very nice sound to it. Pardon my absolute ignoreance, but what is the difference between overdrive and distortion, beacuse i know the luther drive is classed as an overdrive pedal, but from what i can see, distortion pedals and overdrive pedals seem to work in almost the same way.

Re: Distortion Pedal

If you need really heavey try the EH metal muff, if you just need a little more, MXR pedals are a good choice like meka said, I like the MXR distortion +

fuzz, od, distortion all fall under the one big category of distortion. when people start diffentiating OD from distortion pedals, usually they mean OD for varying degrees of tube-amp like breakup and distortion for the higher gain stuff. most high gain OD pedals ARE also classified as distortion pedals.

if you're looking for a ds1 sound, i'd take a look at the satchurator, since it's like a tricked out ds1.

Re: Distortion Pedal

Hmmmmmmmm the MXR pedals seem to be the choice for most people, i may have to go and give the Wylde overdrive a go if there is a shop close by with it in stock. What are peoples opinion on the luther, i really like the sound of the pedal, i just a tiny bit more gain from my amp. Does anybody know if GMD has done a luther drive vs wylde overdrive vid???

Re: Distortion Pedal

I use a few...I found the Boss metal Core (Black )to be an awsome distortion pedal and I use it alot as my main pedal, when Im not using the amps distortion.
But If I need a little more gain for leads or heavier tone I hit my MXR distortion III.(red)
Its not a powerful distortion pedal, but it gives me enough to get wher I need to be......
