HUM!!! is it just the room?

noticing massive amounts of hum at my rehearsal space lately even with my humbuckers with distortion pedals on, do I have bad power supply or patch cables or is it just the room , also we play LOUD like 100 watt jcm 2000s 3/4th cranked and the room is filled with many mics and mixers and amps plugged in so could it be a dirty power type of thing?
I never really notice at venues or at home but damn is it annoying when we are working on new songs

Did it just start? If it did, start taking things out of your chain until it goes away.

do you think it could be a pedal ? all of my pedals are almost brand new

I have noticed it for a few jam sessions now the only change is I put a tc dark matter distortion on the board which I find is quite noisy when kicked on humwise

Is it isolated to just *your* rig?

yeah it seems my bros rig is pretty silent hum wise and he is just 2 feet away from me, is there any way it could be the amp ? its a rehearsal space used by many in a big city so, I really don't want it to be my rig lol but I could see if it was cheap patch cables which is what I use I think we talked about this in another forum

Re: HUM!!! is it just the room?

Some pedals are noisy by nature, like fuzz and compressors. But if your rig is making noise with everything bypassed, then wiggle your patch cables, although I doubt that's what it is. Patch cables are so short that they're usually not responsible for noise issues; it's the long runs that are exposed to outside magnetic interferences the most. Patch cables are typically "pass/fail" in my experiences.
Plug straight in and check for noise. If it's quiet, add the pedalboard with everything bypassed. If that's quiet, turn on one pedal at a time and check each one.

OK I will do this next time I'm at the rehearsal space , thanks alot . I will plug in just to the amp and see if there is hum and then go through my board and see if its pedals its just all my pedals are new and pretty expensive pedals so I'm hoping its just the cheap patch cables that may be the problem or the old power surge bars at the space

Re: HUM!!! is it just the room?

the trouble is, some pedals just don't like being on the same power supply as others, and this causes hum. not saying that's what has happened here, but it does happen.

that was my next question!!

noise in a rig is a funny thing... as soon as you find it (and you WILL find it), everyone on the internet is going to say "DUH!! that's the first thing i always check!!", even if it's the color of the pickup rings.
even when you win, you just can't win sometimes.

Yeah, because it cures hum...

(IF the power source was the problem, which is pretty common....)

there are other power supplies out there. the voodoo is pretty expensive, but i hear it's very good. how many pedals do you use? maybe one of the T Rex power supplies would be better

Re: HUM!!! is it just the room?

there are cheaper ones out there. the voodoo lab is kind of the going industry standard. i've had mine for over 5 yrs and have no complaints. they make the ISO 5, which is smaller and cheaper, but i am sure it works very well. they also have a 4x4 out, but i don't know anything about it yet.
make sure that the power supply is the issue first, though. the very best way to do that is to put batteries in the pedals, then pull the Onespot out and see if the noise is still there. batteries are the absolute end-all, be-all in clean power for your pedals, but they get expensive and they're a general pain in the ass, so i'll never go back to them, in any of their forms. the best power supply will replicate that to the best it can by transforming the wall voltage to a usable pedal voltage, rectifying it to DC and filtering out the voltage wave to a flat potential. the voodoo lab does all that, PLUS isolate each outlet from each other, so the pedals won't be able to affect each other via the power supply. daisy chaining some pedals together has been said to cause problems, and this eliminates that, although other pedals are just fine.
there are other good power sources out there; Dunlop makes another popular one. i can only vouch for the voodoo lab, personally.
also, keep in mind that buffered pedals are always actively affecting the circuit, even when they are bypassed, so don't think that just because it's "bypassed" that it is eliminated in the troubleshooting.
fun stuff, huh??

Re: HUM!!! is it just the room?

Marshall & Moonshine has nailed it here ^^

One-spot's can be good, but it is often the interaction with the other pedals that causes the hum.

Try battery power just for the Dark Matter. If that works, try the One-spot with JUST the Dark Matter. If that works while lessening the hum that you get from the Dark Matter, you might be able to get away with a second One-spot just for the Dark Matter (as a cheaper solution).

I bought a Voodoo, my One-spot got sentenced to the spare parts box. I sometimes use it if I want to use just a single pedal instead of my pedal board.

I will try that and see how it goes, I think after I suss out its the power supply which it most likely is I will invest in a voodoo labs pedal power plus , I got 7 pedals at the moment

also the hum goes away when I turn down the guitars volume so does that mean it is not the power supply ??

it could still be it. the natural hum of the high gain dark matter will be increased by dirty power

if that doesn't work you have my permission to sacrifice Marshall&Moonshine to the gods of pedals.

Re: HUM!!! is it just the room?

Before we start throwing more logs on the fire, lets make sure it's the power source.
Also, what is the house voltage in Canadia?? I don't know if the voodoo lab has one for 220V, so it's something to consider.

Two- 100 watt stacks 3/4th cranked, and your buddy is two feet away? maybe the noise you hear is tinnitus
