Which overdrive/distortion pedal

As the title says, I'm currently looking for a new pedal. I don't have any pedals yet, since I spent my money on a Fender Champ 600. I love the sound I get from it but I want more distortion on some songs.

A friend of mine suggested that I should look into a Big Muff instead of the Boss SD-1. Which he owns.

So, which pedals do you guys recommend?

BTW, I play a Epiphone standard and money is a issue so I'm in the market for a cheap one.

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

try as many as you can with your amp then you will know it's the right one, only you really know what you are looking for and only you will know the difference, It's also great fun trying to find that sound.
I wish you luck with this but I guarantee it will not be the last overdrive pedal you buy.

have a good time checking them out.

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

What kind of tone are you going for? How much distortion? What kind of music are you playing?

These are some of the questions you'll be asked when looking for a pedal. Eventually you'll get the answer "go try some out and get the one you like". I was looking for a pedal recently and looked on YouTube for reviews. I decided on the Metal Muff. haven't gotten it yet, but it seems to be pretty versatile. Check out gearmandude on YouTube. He has some great reviews. Just search YouTube for some pedals you have in mind and see how they sound.

Good luck

Thanks, I'll check some out on Youtube. The problem is that the stores nearby don't really have a lot of pedals so I can't try them out. I have to order it online.

The tone I'm looking for is a mild overdrive. Close to Paul Kossoff's tone. Would a Big Muff suit that?

Mild distortion that retains the natural sound of the guitar? Fulltone OCD

The Fulltone sounds good from the clips on the homepage. I'll definitely look more into it. Thanks Pwoznic.

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

No prob. You can also look at the Metal Muff (very versatile in its distortion range despite the name) and the MI Audio Crunch Box (JCM 800 goodness, but also versatile).

The OCD is great, but sometimes it doesn't have 'enough' gain for me, so I use an EQ to fix that

You ought to consider changing out those epiphone pickups as well, that should give you a much improved sound.

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

Here's the Metal Muff review that made my decision for me. Paul at Guitar World covers a variety of tones in it. The video is at the bottom of the page. Not sure if it'll get ya Kossoff though.

I was lookin' at the OCD and Crunch Box at one point also. I can get the Metal Muff from the shop near me, but they don't carry it in-store.

For overdrives I strongly recommend the Barber pedals... very versatile from what I've heard.

If you're on an uber tight budget, try the Bad Monkey..

+ 1 on the BB Preamp. I love mine. I also have a Barber Tone Pump which gives you two versatile OD options.

nice board, whats that rust driver? Yeah I use the fulldrive 2 also. The compcut gives me an extremely tranparent tone for funk rythms and stuff like that. The BB makes everything sound good.

One thing I might add: I never really got an OD/distorted tone I liked with my stock Epi pickups.

HAO Rust Driver It's a cool pedal with a cranked Plexi tone. Very compressed with lots of sustain, big bottom, sweet midrange, lots of harmonics. It also cleans up when guitar volume is lowered. Maybe I should have recommended this one too. Only has a knob for level. No gain adjustment. Must use the Guitar volume knob to vary amount of drive.

Here's a pic and some ad copy. Evidently you can purchase through Musicians Friend now.

The Rust Driver Distortion Pedal from Hao was designed to recreate the classic sound of a late 60's Marshall Plexi running at full-bore grind. Its carefully selected components allow the Rust Driver to faithfully perform this function with any amplifier, at any volume level. The result is a commanding guitar tone with a tight, thick bottom and extremely low signal-to-noise ratio. A single knob controls output level and gain while 3 switchable EQ curves offer plentiful tonal options without compromising your guitar sound. When you need that "Plexi Sound" regardless of the playing situation, the Rust Driver is an affordable, reliable, portable alternative to the real thing.

Buy Hao Rust Driver Plexi Distortion Pedal online at Musician's Friend

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

I have 3 flavors of buzz. Boss SD-1 for overdrive, rat or electro harmonix hot tubes for crunchy and a metal muff for face melting ODist. The metal muff actually sounds great with the neck pu of a LP or Flying V and the tone pot rolled way down. Like a slightly metallic allmans.

TS-808 Tubescreamer for overdrive, ZVEX Box of Rock for distortion.

Fulltone OCD and a TS-9. That's what I use for my overdrive duties, if I want pretty gritty dist, the lead channel on my amp will do.

Grtz,

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

I just picked up a Boss DS-1 for about $35. I thought what the heck for that price if I don't like it I can take it back or whatever. Well, for me, this pedal kicks ass! It has a nice fat sound that I like through all my amps. My G&L loves it. So have a look at this one, it might be one you like! Peace ... Gibsonblues

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

The stock DS-1 really sounds good through the SD Humbucker on the G&L but not so good with the Burstbucker Pro's on the LPVM. After spending a little time I was able to dial in an "ok" tone with the DS-1 and Gibson. I'm thinking I will mod the pedal though. I listened to some mods by Monte Allums that sounded good and they sell the mod kit for less than $30. Less than Keeley or Analogman. Still not a bad stock pedal with the right guitar and pups though.

DS-1 is a good cheap option; bit too fuzzy and sometimes too thin but its quite good.

The orange paint comes off real easy, lol.

Marshall Guv'nor II gives a very good tube amp like distortion. I A/B it against a Rivera Bonehead amp's gain channel and it was very hard to tell the difference.

Re: Which overdrive/distortion pedal

Boss OD20 is a great pedal, affording you (for around $170) access to 22 classic overdrive and distortion pedals, from the tube screamer, centaur OD, fuzz face, big muff, rat, mxr distortion +, octa-fuzz, various metal pedals (hyper metal, metal zone etc), ds-1, od-1, od-2, blues driver etc. I'd always been a tube screamer fan, but the the tube screamer in the OD20 sounds as real as the real one I had. And it's ncie to have a bunch of other overdrive and distortion sounds to play with all in one pedal (you can set up 4 presets, plus a manual setting = five different pedals at once in one fine stompbox).
