No it doesn't, in a relative sense. Try some more pedals for yourself before deciding. The OD-808 isn't one of the pedals that cleans up really nicely, and you'll find it's worth trying some that do. It's a real education.

12AY7 is fixing the symptom without getting to the root of the problem. It's only 2 resistors to change to get it to bias nicely, only one resistor to change to reduce the gain with a 12AX7.

That makes sense and you're probably right, but as long as i'm satisfied, everything's fine....
