NPD: Skreddy SDMD

I made a lucky deal and came up with a Skreddy Screw Driver Mini Deluxe, which arrived today. I haven't had a lot of cockpit time with it yet. For those of you unfamiliar with the SDMD, it's an 'OD' that's based on the Fuzz Face, but with a treble-boost input stage.

Perhaps the main thing is that this pedal can cover a lot of ground -- booster, treble booster, OD, distortion, and fuzz. You can just about twist the five knobs randomly and get a useful sound. Dialing in specific tones takes a little more work or experience. I don't think it will be too hard once I figure out how everything works and interacts. While it's tweaky, the knobs aren't too touchy, which seems like an amazing feat considering the range this pedal is capable of. Still, it's probably not the best pedal to try to reconfigure between songs when playing live.

No less important is the sound quality. As far as I can tell, the SDMD is about as good as it gets. Quiet, too. Works great with my LP. I'm going to leave a lot of stuff out as this isn't intended to be any kind of review and I'm just getting acquainted with it.

What doesn't it do? Although the SDMD has quite a lot of gain, you'd want something else to cover the more aggressive end of the fuzz spectrum. I'll leave the discussion of classic vs. modern to others. To me, it sounds kind of like both, depending on how it's set. It might cover some types of metal, depending on vintage and style, but I'm out of my depth on that topic.

Drawbacks: It's not the cheapest pedal out there and there's a two-month wait for new ones. Like other wait-list pedals, used prices can be high.

If you want a high quality general-purpose drive pedal, the Skreddy SDMD is well worth checking out.

The demo that 2009LPGT had done on his Skreddy first drew my attention to this pedal-builder. I'm sticking around for the in-depth review...

Sure. It might be a while, though. I think that this could be a difficult pedal to review adequately or properly.
