big muff??

Hey guys, haven't been here a while, but im sure a lot of you have a lot of experience with big muff pis. i generally want it to sound massive, i mostly want it to have some grit, but if i can get some smoothness out of it, even better. basically ive been looking at the big muff pi w/ tone wicker, or maybe even bass big muff, but if those aren't too good, i might get a clone, i was looking at stomp under foot clones, but i dont know which one would suit my needs the best? i just want a versatile muff, that can handle tones like
David gilmour, (the wall)
smashing pumpkins (siamese dream)
and maybe black sabbath?
btw guys i havent gotten it yet but im getting a tube screamer ts9dx really soon, and i heard using a tube screamer to boost a muff is amazing, so if you guys know if the muff works well with a boost, please let me know.

tl;dr need a relatively versatile muff, for pink floyd and smashing pumpkins and black sabbath

Re: big muff??

the big muff pi, IMHO, doesn't get enough or dare I say any fuzz grit. its more like a really low distortion. I would get a zvex if I was you. its got a lot of switches and options. also what comes to mind is aligatorbling fuzz based off the bosstone circuit. (mLp member) his fuzz can definetly get you those tones. give him a pm

Re: big muff??

Yeah, the BMP is mainly about mooth, almost fizzy distortion-fuzz. Very little grit in my experience - for that I'd look at stacking overdrives and/or putting an OD after a fuzz.

Gilmour uses a "Ram's Head" or "Russian" Big Muff depending on period - see Gilmourish.com for any and all info on that, Björn recently ran a series of articles dedicated to the Big Muff and he has several tone guides. Dunno about the other bands you mentioned. DG and the Pumpkins use brighter guitars than LPs though don't they?

Re: big muff??

Same here. I'm all Muffed out at the moment, but the Blunderbuss version Musket would be top of my list! For all your historic Muff clone needs, see North Effects in the UK. MJM also seem to make a number of variations and my Hoof from Earthquaker Devices is a Ge/Si hybrid Muff and amazingly over the top.

Re: big muff??

You need a OpAmp Big Muff for Siamese Dream Pumpkins. That's what Billy used and owns.

Here's my friends site:The Big Muff Pi Home Page

If you don't visit it you are missing out.

I'm a Big Muff enthusiast. I own 13 (Vintage, Modern, Russian) and have built many, modded many and revised many.

BTW, you ain't gonna get all them sounds out of just ONE muff.

Re: big muff??

Lysol speaks truth.
Siamese Dream - opamp muff
Sabbath - Thick Orange style amp sound, preamp boosted
Gilmour - DSOTM was a boosted Fuzzface, go for a Skreddy Lunar Module. Classic Gilmour is a Civil War Sovtek muff, the Musket is cool, SuF is good, my pick is Wren and Cuff Box of War. Killer live Muff.

Re: big muff??

you don't "NEED" an op-amp muff for SP stuff. it just gets you that extra 5% there

skreddy lunar module is great, but super expensive. i mean i already have the fuzz factory, and it's ok for some things but im starting to want an actual big muff to get big muff tones. i like the fuzz factory, but its no big muff ya kno?

ignore the FF and the lunar module. there are pedals like the musket or Royal Beaver out there.

Re: big muff??

The best Big Muffs are not clones IMO. They are the 1978 1322 OPAMP version and the 1981 3034 Transistor version.

Both kick major ass. I love all my Muffs but these two are my favorites.

Both of these can be had on eBay for around $100 if you look often.

I also have 3 1st issue Green Sovteks that are among my favorites, I modded them all as stock they suck but they look cool and now they sound cool.

And no, contrary to interwebz myth they are not made out of recycled Soviet tanks...unless Soviet tanks were made of Aluminium.

Re: big muff??

I've owned a lot of muffs. My favorite was my v3. It had the biggest, meanest sound. The only one I have left is my 1978 Opamp. It's my first vintage pedal I ever picked up and I just can't seem to part with it. I do have a Catalinbread Manx Loaghtan. It is absolutely amazing. I like it a lot more than the Earthquaker Hoof that I used to have. It seems to have more control than even the hoof. It even gets closer to the Siamese Dream sound than my Opamp. It will stay on my board until I find a better alternative.
